What is Subtraction?

Subtraction means to take away one number from another number. In our last unit, we learned how to add numbers together, which is adding one number to another. With subtraction, it is the very opposite! We will take a number away from another, instead of adding it! This is subtraction.

Lets Learn How to Subtract 2 Single-Digit Numbers!

When we are subtracting, we are simply just finding out how many are left after we take something away! If you have 5 apples total, and then you eat 3 of them, you would have 2 left! We can figure out how to solve subtraction problems by drawing pictures, counting on our fingers, or jumping backwards on a number line! If we draw 5 apples, and cross 3 of them out, you would see that there are 2 apples that are not crossed out. If you held up 5 fingers, and then put 3 down, how many would be left? 2 fingers would be left! If we started at 5 on a number line, and jumped backwards 3 times, we would land on the number 2!

When Do We Use Subtraction in the Real World?

Just like addition, subtraction is very important and is used very often in the real world! Some examples of subtraction being used in real life include when you are dealing with money, when you are sharing and you want to find out how many of your item are left after you gave some to your friend, if you are following a recipe you may use subtraction, or when you are dealing with time, knowing how to figure out how much time is left after a certain amount already passed is important! These are just some of the many examples of subtraction being used in your day-to-day life! Do not worry though, that is why we are learning it!
