They’re spilled when a traveling cargo ship wrecks, or, let’s just say, springs a leak, heavily polluting the sea. Oil, being lighter than water, rises to the top of the water. What’s so bad about that, you might say. Well, I’ll tell you. If the oil covers the top of the water, then fish, who don’t just breathe water, mind you, they need oxygen too, won’t be able to receive the oxygen that regularly reaches them, because of the oil. They’ll die. Fish make up the meals of 1 out of every 4 people, and their are millions upon thousands of cultures in which fish take a huge part in. Take Japan for an example. You must know about sushi. That came from japan. And people eat it every single day. Many people don’t cope well with change. What if fish suddenly disappeared off the face of the earth? Another thing about oil spills is that they are very hard to clean up. Oil is also... flammable. And if it’s on top of the water... and it leaked out from a crashed boat... which usually combusts... that oil could catch fire. It could EXPLODE. Now I’m pretty sure I don’t even need to tell you why that’s bad. Birds live on the ocean too. They dive to catch their food, which could be anywhere... including under a patch of oil. And their feathers could get stuck in the oil. This prevents them from taking off. Sharks could get them, and after that, they could get the oil in their gills, and they’d die too. Oils spills are also problems to whales. Whales need to breathe oxygen, and they do it by coming to the surface every so often. They don’t have gills though; they have a blowhole on the top of their head, like dolphins. This happened off the Persian Gulf of Kuwait in January 19th, 1991 in the middle of war. One of the worst details about this spill wasn’t the loss of the ship or even the amount of oil spilled (even though the ship spilled about 380-520 gallons). It was the fact that this was done ON PURPOSE. Well, it was war. Soldiers blew up the ship for who knows what.
