He recruited northern blacks to fight for the Union Army. He also was a living counter- example to slave holders' arguments that blacks were uneducated and lacked intelligence. He became the first African-American to be nominated for Vice President. </div>]]></description>

He was the only African-American at the Seneca Falls Convention. He was a firm believer in having conversations with slave holders. When he was criticized for this, he famously said, "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong."</div>]]></description>
