In the late 1980's we were 'threatened' with a Mediterranean climate unless something was done. Come 2017 the weather is as cold as its ever been, and quite frankly, I wish it would warm up a bit, say by 5 degrees C on average.

Reply: 2017 might have been cold in your place, however globally the temperatures have risen, the south pole has been shrinking and we've encountered more and more tropical storms - all of this relating to the increase of temperature

"Population is the problem.

Whilst the UK population is exploding we have now entered a rapid house building era.

Ripping up the very habitat that absorbs ço2.

Over population increases demand for food production felling forests at a alarming rate 58k square miles each year.

Some religions think contraception and low child production is ungodly.

We reward large families with cash."

Reply: I agree with this opinion. It may not be a "solid" way to stop global warming, but will allow it to develop at a much smaller / slower scale, and allow the CO2 levels to rebalance (go downwards) if the human population decreases. As the population decreases, the demand for housing / deforestation / factories that cause massive air pollution will decrease at an exponential rate as everyone will already be housed, so the need to clear up new land will be less and less.

However, to be realistic, it will be extremely difficult to implement laws / changes to decrease human populations. Governments will be unwilling to do this as they might fall behind economically to others, or others who have yet to industrialise may get disadvantaged from limits to pollution. Further, many people are already convinced that contraception is ungodly (Catholics etc) and many rural families believe large families will bring them much success, therefore will provide further problems to this idea.

"If people actually do some research you would note that 'climate change' is not only happening on earth but on every planet in the solar system - -personally i think that human caused climate change is minute when compared to solar activity - the force of the human on the earth is overblown and exaggerated."

Response:
First of all, it's completely irrelevant to talk about what happens on other planets when infact, there is still so much left undiscovered on our own planet.
Secondly, the fact that humans have only been around recently, but yet have managed to increase global temperatures, wipe out species and destroy ecosystems, is only a foreshadowing of the effect of our potential to wreak havoc.

"Given that one warmist is claiming the Antarctic ice is increasing & the other says it is decreasing, that shows just how unreliable the warmists reports are; so what is the point in reading the whole report written by unreliable people?

Basically that means that the whole report is unreliable, so any claim by them of man-made warming is unreliable, which is what the sceptics say. "
reply: I totally agree, online there are tons of articles saying that the ice is melting, and then tons of articles stating that the ice in Antarctica is increasing. The reason this topic is so controversial is because there are many statics that contradict each other, this is due to some scientist only measuring a parts of Antartica.
However I think even though the report is unreliable, other factors could lead people to believe that the Antartica ice caps are melting, the higher temperatures, the smaller change in season e.g fro spring to summer. In addition to that the decrease number in polar bears. These factors all lead to the conclusion that the ice caps are melting, in some places maybe their is an increase in ice caps, however I believe that more ice caps are melting than being created.

Report Comment number 1620

Link to Comment number 1620

"Firstly, percentages mean nothing, they're just ratio's really. It doesn't matter what the % of CO2 is in the atmosphere, the effect of increasing these levels is what is being discussed here. The levels of CO2 added by human efforts is significant and demonstrably causing the climate to change. Saying otherwise is ignorance of the facts."

Response: It is true that the increase of levels of CO2 is caused by human activity, but the percentages matter just as much. Although CO2 levels on the earth is only 0.04%, the manmade activities such as burning of fossil fuels is the biggest contribution to the release of CO2 therefore which is why there's enhanced greenhouse gases leading to global warming.

"Overpopulation seems a very popular choice to blame for global warming, especially for those on the right.

Total rubbish though.

The problem is not too many humans, it’s the billions of us in the 1st world frantically consuming ever increasing amounts of energy, most of it fossil fuel based. Each one of our carbon footprints is massively bigger than those in the 3rd world."

Response: It is true that consuming more energy contributes to an increase in carbon dioxide level. However, the more people on the planet; the more burning fossil fuels. Cutting emissions can only do so much when the number of humans on the planet continues to rise and carry on consuming fossil fuels. Rich countries produce more CO2 per capita then poor. US alone produces 20x more than all of Sub-Saharan Africa combined. The combination of these effects lead to an increase in carbon dioxide level and global warming.

"the biggest climate driver is the sun, we are now entering the grand solar minimum, less sun activity, cosmic rays affect the planet in times of GSM which effects the climate= more cloud more precipitation and cooler. correlation with increased seismic activity, your being fed rubbish by the bbc in its climate agenda, co2 is a natural atmospheric gas at 0.04% of total concentration"

Response:
Yes CO2 is a natural atmospheric gas at a low percentage of 0.04%, however we are increasing the concentration of CO2 and other green house gases with the enhanced green house effect. If we are entering the grand solar minimum why are the glacier on earth shrinking, less snow falling and higher temperatures. According to your statement it should be the opposite, however it is not the Gangotri Glacier has retread over 850 meters over the past 25 years.
So no BBC is not feeding rubbish they are trying to state some facts which might enlighten the people about the situation and maybe support the government with finding a solution.

"People should stop consuming so much and we should attempt to slow population growth. Unfortunately fact is greater population leads to greater CO2, unless we change lifestyles."

Response: Although it is the fact that less consumption leads to the slower rate of global warming and climate change, our consumption cannot be simply "stopped", as the use of non-renewable energy became so important in our lives that we have not yet found a strong alternative method that can make us stop consuming. Therefore, unless we find a renewable source energy that is reliable enough to replace our current source of energy that involves the combustion of fossil fuels, it will be hard for us to cut our carbon emission level.
