Josef's house was broken into and his father got sent away to a concentration camp. The Nazi's also broke as much as possible things in Josef's house and they had to leave Germany. Isabel family doesn't have much money and Cuba was at risk of starvation. Cuba is ruled by Castro who doesn't let anybody out of the country even at the brink of death. Mahmoud tried to stay "invisible" to stay under the radar. Syria was all bombed out so Mahmoud took a different path everyday with Waleed to decrease the chance of being bombed.

The time period is very broad. There is a very abrupt start. In each chapter the perspective, time period, and place changes. In Isabel's chapter, they describe her appearance more thoroughly. The end of Isabel's chapter feels like foreshadowing. Mahmoud's chapter explains more of his emotions.

Josef tried to take off his armband and his star and go into the 'german' area to buy a newspaper but got found out.

Isabel was just done playing when a riot broke out and she had to find her dad and grandfather.

Muhamed was praying with his brother and their apartment got bombed shortly after. Josef got returned to his compartment.

Josef and his family sat in the J section for Jew so no Germans would sit there. they were going to Hamburg Germany to meet his father by the ship they were going to board. They were going to Cuba to wait until they can get into the United States. Josef went into the German car. Then the dining car. Josef then bought a newspaper and talked with the shop owner. Josef's armband fell out of his pocket on the train and some Hitler Youth kids stomped on it and they took Josef. Isabel saw a riot break out in Havana Cuba with her Father and Grandfather somewhere stuck in the middle of it. Some of the rioters were chanting "Freedom! Freedom!" "Castro out!" They had to leave Cuba tonight. Mahmoud went to pray while his brother sat by the TV Then the whole wall got destroyed while they were praying. Mahmoud found his family and got ready to evacuate before they were hit with another airstrike

I am curious to know if the different perspectives might overlap. Josef and his family are "invisble". In Isabel's chapter, people are rioting. The different time periods in each chapter are confusing. It seems like for each chapter, the first chapter was an introduction and the second chapter, disaster strikes.

Josef arrived at the Hamburg railroad station. Josef and his Mother and Sister made their way to the Hamburg docks to meet up with his Father and board their ship. Josef met up with his father. Josef's father proceeded to run onboard without a ticket but Josef's mother has his ticket. Josef and Ruth went up to the promenade to watch the boat depart. Isabel's father has been arrested several times for trying to escape Cuba. Isabel's father was going to run away again and escape Cuba. Josef was going to have his bar mitzvah without his father! Josef celebrated his bar mitzvah. Josef overheard some stewards talking about how they might not make it to Cuba and be turned away. Senor Castillo was in charge of the boat. Isabel left Cuba and was headed to Florida. Mahmoud was in Türkiye. Mahmoud's father had found a ride but they had to leave right away. Josef found his father at the docks on a boat named after a town in America. They got on the boat safely, his father is kind of insane.

Isabel's father needs to leave cuba so they got gasolene for their neighbors boat so that they could all leave. She had to give up her trumpet and gave the fisherman the responsibility of taking care of the cat.

Mahmoud's TV fell through the floor and he had to help his brother.

The Hitler Youth lets Josef go. They arrive at the Hamburg docks and see his father. He is so scared of people hurting him that he is living in fear. Isabel's father wants to leave, but it will be very hard for him. Suddenly, Castro makes an announcement on the TV that Cubans will be allowed to leave. Isabel gives away her trumpet for gasoline. Mahmoud sees the aftermath of a missile hitting his apartment.

The boat's engine was not starting! and Isabel's grandfather talked about how her father is not a good man. Then a giant tanker ship came rushing towards them. Mahmoud and his family saw one of the smugglers and he said there was no boat today so they had to wait for the next day. Since there was no boat Mahmoud and his family went looking around in Izmir. There was no hotel rooms so they had to spend the night elsewhere. some little boy led them to a place to sleep. Josef's father claimed that the nazi's were after them. they wanted to go to a funeral of somebody they never met. they went to the funeral and Josef's father had an argument with a Nazi supporter. A day away from Cuba the boat threw a party. The next morning they had dropped the anchor because of a medical quarantine. they need to run through some procedures to approved by the medical authorities. everyone had to line up in the social hall to be accepted into the country. they had passed the doctor examination! they were going to bet let into Cuba tomorrow. Isabel fell overboard and the boat turned over. The tanker passed. Mahmoud and his family had to ride on a raft not even a boat! Mahmoud and his family were finally leaving for Europe. Josef was grabbed by a man who was harassing Jewish passengers. it was also a crime in Cuba to be a Jew so Josef was being taken away by some men. they made him lead them to their cabin and they ransacked their room. Isabel has a flashback on how her Grandmother died. Mahmoud and his family fell overboard on the dinghy. Hana was gone and his Father and Brother. Josef had to take care of his father but his mother was falling asleep. Josef's father kept talking and talking until he fell asleep.

Josef and his family board MS St. Louis and get to experience things that they haven't in a long time. Josef and Ruthie meet some other girls and have fun with them. In Isabel's story, they are getting ready to board the boat and go to Florida. Suddenly, they see a news team who distracts them from leaving. They look up to find that so many people are leaving Cuba with makeshift boats. Isabel's father thinks he's about to be arrested, but instead it was Luis and his girlfriend. Mahmoud is leaving Syria with his family. Abruptly, they are stopped by people who wave at them to stop. They all have automatic rifles. They end up not hurting him, and instead, join for the ride.

Josef is going to have his Bat Mitzvah on the ship. His father is so paranoid that he is not going. Evelyne and Renata are trying to play pranks on the ship, but Josef attempts to stop them. He overhears talk on the ship about possibly not being able to go to Cuba. In Isabel's chapter, they stuff a lot of people on the boat. Senor Castillo had to put something thick and bulky at the bottom, so he stuffed pictures of Fidel Castro into the boat. Lito starts flirting with Luis's girlfriend. In Mahmoud's chapter, his family is waiting to be let in to Turkey, among many other Syrians.

Isabel landed in the Bahamas but they had to be sent back to Cuba if they set foot on land. so they had to leave. Hana was gone and Mahmoud's father and Waleed was lost. So it was just Mahmoud and his mother. Mahmoud found a man dead with a working life jacket. Mahmoud got the real life jacket to his mother. Josef's father jumped overboard and was swimming away. A Cuban police man jumped in after him. His father was gone. The boat was falling apart. Mahmoud was sleeping and waking whenever while riding the waves. a Greek coastguard boat had come to rescue them with Mahmoud's father and brother there too. they made it to shore of Greece. Josef got to see the man who saved his father. Ivan wanted to name the boat.

Muhmoud flagged a car and the person knew their language, the man was very nice and agreed to help them.

Josef kind of arrived, he danced with his mom at the party. The chapter said 13 days away. Did that mean he had thirteen days until getting to his destination, or 13 days out?

Mahmoud and his family were going gto board the ship. Mahmoud and Waleed went up to the promenade to see the boat depart. Mahmoud and his family were going to sneek across the border in the middle of the night. Evelyne and Renata's father came on board to let them leave early. Everyone was going to be sent back to Germany. The boat departed to the unknown. Ivan was dead and they didn't know what to do. They threw Ivan's body off into the deep dark sea. Josef's father is still worried. He decides to attend a funeral on the ship, but has conflict with Schiendick. Isabel's boat ends up in trouble when they approach another ship. They think they're going to die, but the engine starts. Isabel dives in to rescue Senor Castillo. Mahmoud's family has been told again that they won't have a boat the next day. They try to go back to the mall, but instead are told they must pay rent to be there.

Isabel and Amara tipped the engine over the side so they would sink slower and hopefully make it to the Miami shore. The US Coast Guards caught them trying to sneak into the country. Mahmoud was being held at gunpoint by the taxi driver for money. tons of refugee's tried to go into Hungary to go to Germany quicker but they were soon threatened and nearly shot by Hungarian border guards. Josef and 9 other men were about to storm the bridge and go after the captain. they held one guy hostage but the captain was not threatened. The ship changed courses from Germany to England. The baby was coming. Everyone was paddling to get to Miami before the coast guard caught them. Mahmoud was detained along with his father and many more groups of refugees. Isabel had to go back to Cuba and there was nothing they could do about it. The next morning the ship landed en Belgium. Josef had been asigned to france. Isabel's grandfather jumped in the water to make a sacrifice so the rest of them could make it to Miami.

Josef was hiding in a school house because the Germans had come to France. Either Josef or his sister had to go to concentration camp. They had to abandon ship. Isabel made it up to United States soil with her baby brother. Mahmoud made it to Austria. Mahmoud had made it to the capital of Austria. Ruthie was the host family for Mahmoud and his family.

When Mahmoud wakes up, the taxi driver has a pistol and is aiming at them. The St. Louis is close to Miami, but the US will not let them dock.

Josef and Ruthie got to see Miami not even a day out of Havana. A group of men invited Josef to help storm the bridge because he took a tour down there. Isabel tried to kick of the engine so they would have less weight and hopefully be able to make it to the states. Isabel and Amara kicked of the engine so the boat would carry less weight and make it to the states. The taxi driver demanded 300 euros so they would live. A group of refugees stormed the unfinished fence thay block off the Hungarian border.

Muhmoud was zip-tied and thrown in a truck with his dad. He was put in a jail.

Mahmoud was being zip tied and was thrown into the back of a metal truck. Mahmoud met up with his father inside the truck. Mahmoud and his father were taken to a refugee detention center. Mahmoud saw his mother and brother in a different cell across from them. The St Lewis was throwing a party because other European countries accepted the refuge so nobody would be sent back to Germany. Josef hoped that they would get England because it was farthest away from Germany but Josef and his family got France. Germany took over Poland and started the world war and soon after they tried to take over France. Mahmoud wanted to walk to Austria. the school that Josef and his family were hiding in were being raided by Nazis. Josef and his family broke the window to run to the woods. The Nazis caught up to them and Josef's mother managed to buy one of her children's freedom. Isabel's brother was born in Miami. Mahmoud and a croud of refugees from the detention center were walking to Austria. Mahmoud made it to Germany. Isabel had school in America. Mahmoud had a host family and the host family was Ruthie and her husband. Ruthie told Mahmoud about Josef.

The old lady is Josef's sister, Ruthie, Josef died with his mom in the camp. The old lady shows Muhmoud pictures of her past. She talked about her brother Josef who died in the holocaust. He helped her hang the picture again, he cried and she was there. They went back to the living room.

It took me so long to connect the dots about Josef and the old lady.

Mahmoud is in Germany! It is a different structure of a city than he is used to. He contemplates when Aleppo will be safe again. Mahmoud's family stays with a German family. The woman turns out to be Ruthie! She tells him about losing Josef and her mother.
