There are more than 1 way that cause earthquakes. An earthquake starts when jagged edges on a plate push against each other that causes a stress. When stress becomes too great the plates grinds against each other or moves on top each other. Then it releases a hypocentre that causes or start an earthquake. 

Or, the earthquake happens or starts when very slow moving plates push against each other at places called faults. That causes or release energy, and the energy causes an earthquake. The earthquakes can cause the plates to overlap or cause the plates to slide past each other.
