It helps me become more invested. I think about this when I am explaining the rules to my kids each year. Students will work harder and feel more invested if they know the why behind their work.

I took 2 parts from this....
As a personal reflection.....Why? What is my why to my what? That's an ongoing thought that comes and goes. It's very discouraging when I can't find my why. Thank you Angie for the introduction to Michael Jr:) Then it also made me consider to explain the why to my students if I want to give them the understanding of why they are doing what they are doing. Knowing the why to their what will help them.

My personal whys for many questions, not just education related, is because I can. Because I am able. Because if I can make a lasting difference in just one student's life, I will. Because, why not? Because life is short and I want to make the greatest impact that I can. Because if I don't, who will? Because I want to leave the world in a better place than when I came into it.

This is very true of art. There has been a shift from the modernist question, "what is art?" to the contemporary question, "What is art for?" In other words, why do we make art? What are we trying to say? What is our message and what method is best to communicate that message? What does art do for us, as artists? In art as well as learning, it is important to know the intent of your actions, for what purpose, and to what ends.

"The WHAT has more impact when you know the WHY." I love this quote by Michael Jr. I have always been a WHY person, which leads me to my strategies used in my own classroom. Many times I always here the popular phrases from students, "What is this" or "Why do we have to do this". I believe they are entitled to know the WHY. Before lessons, I break down the standards with my students to provide them a better understanding of WHY they are learning a particular concept. In return, my students not only have options with the WHAT, but also a purpose to their WHY in learning!

"The key really isn't to know 'WHAT' . The key is to know 'WHY' because when you know your 'WHY', you have options on what your 'WHAT' can be...when you know your 'WHY', your 'WHAT' has more impact because you're walking in or towards your purpose."
1) Who doesn't love having options in life??!!
2) Each of us has a purpose in this life; when we know WHY we are here, WHAT we do can be impactful for generations!
