Essential Question: 4: Beliefs
This technique demonstrates the essential question about beliefs as she is questioning her belief in God because Anoosh has been executed. She wonders where God was in all of this turmoil; thus, she is shouting at him to get out of her life. She is conflicted about her beliefs and the death is influencing her conflict with God.
Graphic Novel Elements: In this picture, the Speech Bubble shape is being used to show the extent of Marjane's anger as she is shouting at God. Her dialogue has an angry tone, and having the speech bubble be jagged emphasizes her shouting tone. Her trust has turned to anger, and this is conveyed in the jagged, shouting shape of the Speech Bubble.

Essential Question: 1: balance
How do individuals balance the demands and requirements of society with their own beliefs. Well in the panel Marjane is being questioned by one of the women who go around making sure everyone is dressed properly. Marjane is wearing her vail and long skirt like she is supposed to but is also wearing a jean jacket. The women grabs the jacket attempting to take away Marjane's freedom. Marjane's beliefs are that she can wear whatever she wants but her society says differently.
Graphic Novel Element:
In this panel the women grabbing onto Marjane is all black, representing the rules of the society. The vail and long skirt Marjane is wearing are also black, representing what the society is forcing her to do and wear. The one thing that is white is Marjane's jean jacket representing her freedom and personal beliefs. The use of the black and white is very prominent and shows things you couldn't say with words.

Essential Question: 3 child to adult
What does it take to go from a child to an adult. Well in this panel Marjane is saying goodbye before she leaves Iran and is telling them to leave. When Marjane was with her parents she was a child but she had to grow up fast when herparents told he she was leaving Iran without them. This is a time in Marjane's life where she had to become an adult and take charge of her own life.
Graphic Novel Elements: faces
The use of facial expressions is used everywhere in this graphic novel but in this particular panel Marjane is using a facial expression of annoyance; wanting her parents to leave. Marjane knew she had to grow up and take care of herself, she wanted to convince herself that she didn't need her parents.

Essential Question: 3) How does a person survive in and make sense of a conflicted world? People survive by remembering who their family and friends are and to lean on them when times are hard. They ask for comfort and insight on the current issue.

Element: Shown on page 121 it shows Mrs. Talischi crying of the tragedy of the grenades blowing up near their room. Her face is full of tears and sadness. While Marji's mother is consoling with Mrs. Talisch.

Essential Question: 4 beliefs
How do we form our beliefs and what influences them. In this panel people are cheering for the fact that they denied a peace act. This shows that people are influenced by their government and if their government says that it's for the best then people will believe it. Almost like people don't know how to create their own beliefs and have their own values. This is a constant theme I have witnessed in this book, instead of taking personal independence they decide that if they have a government then they don't have to do anything because they always know what's best. Although this is not what is true.
Graphic Novel Element:
The Element I chose for this panel is the Element of the caption used. This caption has very large bolded words showing importance towards them. Also the exclamation marks also show that the person saying these words are yelling them . Along with the way that the crowed is slanted also shows the weight of his words.

Essential question: (1) Childhood
What effects us growing up into adulthood? As a child if something big happens in your life a lot of times you remember it forever. Marjane’s friend moves to America and it makes her sad. She doesn't want her friend to move.
In this picture Her face is up close. Her eyes are open wide like she's in shock. her lips are sad. Her eye brows are down. You can see how Marjane’s face doest look happy. It was drawn that way so the reader can see how her emotions are.

Essential question: (4) Beliefs
How do we form our beliefs and what influence them? Marjane heard the story about her uncle sitting in a water cell and she wanted to feel what it was like. so she sat in a bath for a very long time until she was super wrinkly. This shows how strong her beliefs were for him not to feel the pain alone. Beliefs aren’t necessarily about religions, its the confidence in someone or something. her something was sitting in water to feel what her uncle felt.
In this panel it is showing her hands with many wrinkles. This represents the feeling of her raise hands that many people have felt before when they are in water for too long.

Essential question: (2) Cultural Identity
How do individuals balance the demands and requirements of society with their own beliefs? Marjane didn’t know whether her dad was for or against social classes when her “sister” liked the neighbor guy but because she wasn't in the same social class so she couldn't be with him.
In this panel one bubble is her being confused because it isn't her fault she wasn't born in the same social class. The other speech bubble is zig-zags so the reader can tell she is very frustrated and doesn't understand what her dads opinion is.

If Marji wasn't able to convince the lady to let her go home, she would have had to get in the lady's car.

Special Effect Lettering: The image on page 134, down below, emphasizes the tears falling down Marjane's face to trick the woman who caught her listening to music, wearing a denim jacket over her veil with a few of Marji's hair sticking out.
