At Eden Supportive Living, adults with disabilities can access daily living assistance while also enjoying a lifestyle of independence and privacy. Each resident has his or her choice of a studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom apartment, assuming availability, and can select a layout that best suits is or her individual needs. Eden Supportive Living invites all residents to furnish and decorate their rooms to their own tastes, as freedom of choice remains one of the organization's driving values.

The facility strives to ensure that each resident has the opportunity for a fulfilling and connected life. Residents have their own spaces but live in community with peers, and the facility provides a variety of leisure activities to help each resident build connections. The community itself features not only accessibility features but also a variety of recreational amenities including a movie theater, fitness center, and cyber center.

Committed to the health of its residents as well, Eden Supportive Living employs a 24-hour response staff and a team of certified nursing assistants (CNA's), who can provide help with activities of daily living. Self-administered medication management reminders are also available, as is support for transportation to medical appointments. The facility invites residents to make their own arrangements for nursing care, psychological services, and any other services that the residence does not provide.

Mental and Emotional Adjustment to Disability

Equipped to welcome individuals with a variety of disabilities, Eden Supportive Living welcomes adults aged 22 and above. All staff members at Eden Supportive Living complete in-depth training in caring for individuals with disabilities.

When people develop disabilities in adulthood, they typically go through a process of grieving their losses and adjusting to a new reality. Making peace with the loss of functionality can take some time, which may correlate not only with mobility and comfort but also with the level of independence and privacy they previously enjoyed. People with disabilities must not only adjust to practical changes, including inabilities to engage in familiar hobbies or work, they also must reconstruct a sense of self and a place in society that incorporates their new limitations.

As is the case when people experience a death or other major loss, the process of adjusting to a disability may begin with a state of shock or numbness. Many people also go through a period of denial, during which they prefer not to consider the effects of their disabilities.

Anger and depression may set in once the reality of the situation becomes clear. In this stage of grief, people need the validation of losses and their implications.

Progression through grief is a necessary phase in the incorporation of disabilities. This multifaceted process may include spiritual development and values identification as well as psychological perspective changes.

Affordable Assisted Living Coalition Highlights Supportive Living Week

Founded in 2003, Eden Supportive Living is America’s first supportive living facility to serve people with disabilities. To help the Illinois-based facility stay current with industry trends, Eden Supportive Living belongs to the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition (AALC).

A nonprofit organization, AALC is a membership organization comprised of people and businesses that operate low-cost assisted living projects under the state’s Supportive Living Program (SLP), which serves as an alternative to nursing homes for those who can’t afford traditional assisted-living programs and who don’t require all the services offered by a nursing home. The AALC believes that every person deserves high-quality assisted living care, no matter what his or her income might be. The organization also advocates for its members, offers continuing education opportunities, and maintains strong relationships with government officials.

Each year, AALC celebrates Supportive Living Week at the end of April to provide a sense of belonging and a chance for these individuals to pursue their passions, whether they involve playing bingo, decorating cookies, or going on fun excursions. This year’s affair, which marked the event’s 10th anniversary, took place from April 24 through 28. With a theme of “Happiness is Ageless,” activities for the week-long celebration focused on healthy living for the body, mind, and soul, and highlighted ways for communities to embrace those with disabilities.
