Padlet 2: Exploration of the classical era and its cannon

Overview Part 1: My weekend exploring Classical music and cannon

Over the weekend I spent quite some time exploring what classical music truly was and what the definition of cannon was. In diving into the world of classical music it was truly an eye-opening experience one where I attained a fascination with the string music that was incorporated in pieces from classical artist like Bononcini and Handel.

Overall, I enjoyed my exploration into the classical music era and despite not having a vast knowledge of classical music nor a general liking, I think over the course of the weekend I really became a fan of classical music and appreciated its major complexity and instrumental attributes.

The station is known for playing classical music with a similar kind of structure and style originating from around the 18th century to the 19th century. I was exposed to a piece by Bononcini called Sonata da chiesa, Op 5/1 and another piece by Handel named Water Music Suite. One thing that i encountered was that these different pieces of music had similar characteristics as mentioned by Sara Haefeli in her article If History Is Written by the Victors, The music i listened to stuck true to "expectations created by our musical winners that wreak havoc on other musical styles: Notation............Musical language.......[and]The concept of The Work[referring to why the work was made or what emotions the piece evokes]" ( If History Is Written by the Victors, 2017).

As for my experience listening to these pieces, they were both very pleasant to the ear. I could tell they were made for the sole purpose of listening because of the numerous amounts of detail in each piece that would intrigue me as the listener, and make me want to listen in and pay close attention to all the instruments involved. In paying close attention to the songs I listened to I heard a lot of emphasis on violins and little emphasis on other string instruments like Base, Viola’s, etc.

Question 2: Find one example of the Western Art Music Canon represented on UNT’s campus, which is one of the oldest and largest music schools in America. Take a picture or video. Do you see a program posted for an upcoming concert with canonic composers? Students carrying around instruments at the core of some of the most important canonic genres? Do you hear someone practicing what sounds like canonic music?

In my exploration this weekend, not only was it difficult to find different examples of western art music cannon around UNT’S cannon but whenever I did find them each example I found had similar qualities. One thing I discovered about classical music was the following “Classical [Music occurred during the mid-1700’s to around the mid 1800’s] (c.1750 - c.1830) The Baroque era witnessed the creation of a number of musical genres which would maintain a hold on composition for years to come, yet it was the Classical period which saw the introduction of a form which has dominated instrumental composition to the present day: sonata form. (History of Classical Music,2017)”

In discovering this to be a criteria of classical music, one of the examples of classical music that I found on the UNT campus was a music composition student who was playing a piece called sonata 1 by Francesca Lebrun. Francesca Lebrun’s music falls under this criteria and can be considered an example of classical music because she was “Born on March 24, 1756 in Mannheim, Germany, composing music throughout her life and then dying on May 14, 1791 in Berlin, Germany,” (Francesca Lebrun, 2017)This set of events landing in the time period 1750-1830 therefore fitting the criteria. I also had fun exploring the music building to find examples of student projects and events that showcased more pieces that arose during the classical era, I even talked to a music composition major who was playing a piece named Sonata 1 by Francesca Lebrun.
