I live and work in Conroe, TX which is on the north side of the Houston metro area. I am currently teaching beginning orchestra for 5th and 6th graders at Mitchell Intermediate in Conroe Independent School District.

In terms of technology integration we currently use Canvas for students to access course materials including extra scores and recordings. Students are also required to submit regular playing test videos via Google Drive. For class, I use my iPad for a variety of things including AirDrop video to show sight reading examples and playing recordings via a Bluetooth audio connection.

As a part of this class, I am hoping to explore some additional MIDI applications for my teaching and music output. I recently started using OnNote and am working on integrating it with Quantiloop and BeatBuddy via MIDI over Bluetooth.

Hello my name is Tabytha Walls and I currently reside in Charleston, SC. I grew up and went to college in Northeast Ohio, but moved to Charleston when I accepted a position as a high school band director three years ago. I am in charge of teaching marching band and concert at R.B. Stall High School and assist with middle school band at my two feeders.

As mentioned in the module one video, I often only use technology to assist with administrative tasks and productivity. I use Charms office assistant to organize the marching band uniforms and send group emails. I use the Google Apps suite to create spreadsheets, design concert programs, and have students complete forms or submit assignments.

During instruction I do utilize the Tonal Energy app to assist my students with tuning, timing, and matching pitch. Beyond that app, I do have access to a SmartBoard; however, the touch elements of the board have been broken for years, so it does not get used at much as I would like.

It is my hope that during this class I gain knowledge about technology so I can integrate it into my instruction and provide more engaging and meaningful connections through music and technology.

Good evening everyone,

My name is Hunter Martin, and I am the Director of Bands at Leonardtown High School in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, which if you were to glance at a map, is situated along the southern-most region of the western Chesapeake shore. An ordinary day in the life of Hunter usually consists of rehearsals with three concert ensembles as well as a marching band, jazz band, pit orchestra, and pep band. In addition to each of these ensembles, I also teach music to students with an expressed interest in learning how to play piano and music for students with special needs.

As an educator, I am always seeking opportunities for incorporating technology into my lessons and rehearsals—though I am sure that there is room for improvement. For example, I currently have a SMART Board in my room, which when combined with my laptop, is used to share recordings as well as access the Sight-Reading Factory and other websites, including G Major Music Theory, Music Tech Teacher, musictheory.net, and Making Music Fun! Nonetheless, I hope that our work in this particular course will equip us with additional resources, like Noteflight, Finale, MuseScore, Sibelius, and SmartMusic, for incorporating technology into our everyday classroom instruction. With that being said, I wish you all the best of luck this semester and look forward to sharing in this experience with each of you. Have a great week.

Kind regards,

Hunter Martin

My name is Stephanie Cvach and I currently live in Perryville, Maryland. This is my last semester of grad school before the captstone project. I am in my tenth year teaching middle school in Harford County, MD and my first year teaching at Havre de Grace Middle School. I currently teach orchestra and three sections of general music. My teaching loads in previous years also included all the choral ensembles. In addition to my primary teaching position, I work as a musical director for local theaters, accompany regularly on the piano, and work with marching bands.

In the orchestra classroom, I currently use video and audio clips of professional ensembles as well as rehearsal recordings for students to reflect and critique. I also use Seesaw as a recording tool for practice charts and playing tests in the classroom. I loved using Smart Music, which had lots of opportunities for classroom instruction, playing tests, and practice time for students.

I currently use technology in the general music classroom through direct instruction with video/audio clips and flip charts (without an interactive component for the students as I have no Smart Board). I also use Quaver Music for additional resources. Sixth and eighth grade now have one to one technology so tests are created through Microsoft Forms. Students use websites for free music, such as 8note for recorder music. At my previous school, I used OneNote to provide instruction through embedded videos, musictheory.net, and Music Tech Teacher and even had students learn piano on their laptops through Apronus Piano due to a lack of resources.

I am looking forward to finding practical ways to incorporate technology in the classroom that supports my content and pedagogy. We are getting a new building soon so I look forward to even more opportunities at that time!

Hi everyone! My name’s Joshua Hubbard and I am a second year Middle School Music Teacher in Worcester, Massachusetts. This is my second semester, or third class, with the online Master of Music program. I teach four sections 7th and 8th grade general music and one section of 7th grade band. My band class meets every day for the whole year for 43 minutes a day. My general music classes switch every ten weeks, but they meet every day during those ten weeks for 43 minutes a day. In total I teach around 400 student a year. My school has just over 800 students and there is another music teacher in my building. My band class is made up of all beginner players, and my general music classes are performance based with a focus on piano, ukulele, and percussion.

I try to integrate technology into all of my classes. I have a Google Classroom set up for each section of my general music class and for my band. I use everything in the Google platform, Docs, Sheets, Forms, Slides, and Drive, to various degrees with my students. My students love having their rubrics on the computer for instant feedback and that they can constantly check their grades in the class. I post sound recordings, fingering charts, videos of the class and myself performing, and am setting up to have students submit video practice tests. I will also use Socrative for some tests, and I utilize Sibelius on a daily basis. I have experience with Reaper for sound mixing, and a little bit of experience with Audacity.

I am looking forward to this class and interacting with everyone! I cannot wait to see how I can better integrate technology into my classroom and have my students utilize it!

Greetings all! My name is Daniel Baker, and I'm geographically situated in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I'm currently employed as a general music teacher (K-8) and choir director (elementary and middle schools; please find a picture of my elementary choir attached!) at a private institution in Sheboygan, WI. One of the primary ways I make use of technology in my instruction is through the use of a SmartBoard. I use it during classroom instruction to highlight certain material (notation, graphics that emphasize a topic/point, etc.), as well as to provide musical examples for students to listen to and interact with. In the middle school, each of my students has access to a school-issued Chromebook, and we have used these to explore music with a digital keyboard and other compositional/improvisatory exercises. Students can also use their Chromebooks to access a Google classroom (for both choir and general music) to download important class information (syllabi, announcements, assignments, etc.) and materials.

On occasion, I have also used technology for accompaniment purposes when absolutely necessary. And of course, I use technology for administrative tasks.

I look forward to learning with all of you about technology in music education!

I currently teach middle school choir and band, where it is my first year teaching here, and third year teaching overall. I also teach a section of general music to 6th graders that serves as an introduction to choir and band. It is my first year teaching band, and my first year teaching middle school, so this school year has been an adjustment to say the least. Before teaching at this school, I taught high school choir in SC.

Fortunately, my school is 1:1 with Chromebooks, so I have many opportunities to use technology in the classroom. I have this resource, so I try to implement technology in my teaching as much as I can, but I know there are many ways that I can improve in this. One way that I include technology in my teaching is through the use of google classroom for assignments, activities, and recordings. I often include recordings that my students can listen too and sing/play with to help them learn their parts. I also use google classroom for performance and non-performance assessments while posting classroom resources through the use of docs, sheets, forms, slides, and other connective services. For my 6th grade general music class, I also use the website looplabs.com. This site serves as an excellent music composition resource for people with limited music theory knowledge. I'm very excited to learn about other ways to implement technology in my classroom!

I am teaching band and music appreciation at a middle school in Hemet, California, which is in Riverside county. This is my fifth year teaching and I have only taught middle school. I am hoping to move on to high school next school year. This is my second to last course in the program.

My school is in the less affluent part of town, so not much money goes towards technology. The most technology I currently use is google classroom, along with the remind app. Many of my students do not even own phones or computers to be able to use this type of technology, so I use it mostly as a supplement. I have a projector, but not a smart board like I'm used to, so many websites I used to teach music theory don't really work well at this school. I am trying to fundraise to buy a smart board for my classroom and have looked into grants to get my students a set of chrome books.

Hello everyone! My name is Meghan Kelly and I currently teach on Long Island is East Hampton, NY. As a trained bassoonist and instrumental specialist, I graduated Ithaca College and found a passion for general music instead of the instrumental track that was intended. I now teach general music K-6 as well as a chorus of 7th and 8th graders. This is my fifth year teaching. I have been making technology an important part of my curriculum this year to keep up with these kids! In my general music class, I have my 5th and 6th grade students bring their Chromebooks every day. Each student gets their own at my school. I use Google Classroom to post assignments and communicate with students in my 5th and 6th grade classes. I also started a unit this year on Noteflight. This was my first year at the school, and first year using the program, but my administration and parents were thrilled with the outcome of the unit. Students first practiced using Noteflight, and then created their own pieces. It was a challenge to construct a cohesive unit, but I am hoping to gather some useful knowledge from this course on how to construct units based on different programs.

My name is Irene. I'm a California native currently living a few blocks from the beach in my hometown of San Francisco.
I've been working primarily with grade levels K-8. Most of my teaching has been in the context of general music classes but I've done a little bit of ensemble teaching/directing too (For a couple years, I had an elementary school choir and a church handbell choir for middle and high school aged students). I also spent a few years working for a non-profit called ETM-LA (Education Through Music - Los Angeles) as a teacher, a mentor for newer teachers, and as a staff member helping to organize and manage special events. It was a meaningful experience for me, but I am grateful to be back home (in SF) and back in the classroom. I am now back to a very familiar teaching situation, teaching k-8 general music at four different schools.
This is my third class with UFL and I am finding this program to be a great way to breath new life into my teaching. I am greatly enjoying the experience. I use technology in the classroom in the form of using online video content to reinforce concepts and posting videos to aid students' home practice. I also use Garageband, Soundtrap, and Launchpad so students can explore composition. I use Noteflight to create scores to use in the classroom, but I have yet to use it with students. I have used blogging in the past, but currently I am not. I do enjoy blogging, so I look forward to engaging in that activity again. As an itinerant teacher who wants to use more technology, but finds different technology available at each school site, I am excited to learn about additional strategies and tools. I look forward to learning from all of you!

It's great to be back in online grad school with you all and back in the classroom with my music students at Discovery High School in Lawrenceville, GA, a suburb in Metro Atlanta! Our school is approximately 80% Title I, but I absolutely love the diversity of our student body, and the school itself is only 4 years old so everything is practically brand new. I currently teach part time there - 2 sections of Beginning Keyboarding Techniques (or as I call it, Class Piano) and 1 section of Beginning Music Technology. There is already talk of moving me to full-time next year, so I am extremely excited about that. I have included a short video that gives you a sneak peek into my workspace at school and have attached a few photos of my home studio / study space as well. (Raincheck on the home studio photos - evidently, you can only attach 1 file per padlet post - maybe next time!)

In our music lab, we have thirty-two 1:1 workstations with iMacs and Yamaha MX61 keyboards connected via PreSonus AudioBox USB MIDI interfaces. Class Piano generally uses the keyboards 'stand alone' with headphones, although we do also have a Yamaha LC4 Music Lab system, but it is so staticky and finicky that I can't stand to use it, unfortunately. (I don't think it was setup properly - which happened before I arrived.) My Music Technology class is about to embark on a journey with Logic Pro X after a semester of GarageBand exploration, and is filled with lots of aspiring hip-hop artists, so there is never a dull moment.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that I'm a first year teacher, transitioning into public education after 32+ years as a full-time professional church musician / choir director / worship leader / insert whatever other title is trendy these days! Going from 1 full-time job to 3 part-time jobs has been quite a transition, but I am having the most fun that I have ever had, and have always considered myself a music teacher, even in the church music arena! I am still a part-time church musician and also the woodwind instructor for our local high school marching band, in addition to my new job at DHS, but I digress...

I am a MIDIot and a self confessing tech geek. My students always get a big smile on their face when I tell them I've been doing this since before MIDI was even invented! I have so many gadgets, keyboards, synth modules, computers, tablets, etc, that I could use another room in my house to store them all. I use as much of it as possible to provide hands on experience for my students - including all my vintage MIDI gear - so that they know how fortunate they are to be able to do music tech the "easy" way, now via virtual instruments, without having to worry about constantly plugging and unplugging all manner of patch cables, MIDI cables, audio cables and the like.

In the classroom I also use our district's version of Canvas, which is called eCLASS, but more recently only use it to point my students to Google Classroom, which is a much better interface in my opinion. I am already loving the way this course is integrating much of the information and instructional material via Google Docs, etc. It just makes so much more sense and it is all in one place for easy access and editing from semester to semester!

Oh! We have used padlet in our school-wide faculty meetings as well as our classrooms. I use it as a place for students to post quick questions and tech support needs.

I look forward to learning from each of you!

If you're interested in more biographical information about me, check out my personal website
http://www.davidthomas.us/about.html
