Jonas' community uses conformity to control the citizens actions and emotions. By controlling their actions and emotions it takes away the humanity inside the community. But when you take away the actions and emotions of the people it helps people resists the urge to do wrong. For example while jonas is having these dreams of pleasure his family is forcing him to take the pills. By doing this it takes away the feel of puberty and love for a person. This is how society creates conformity and tamps down in dissent and difference.

The society removes the idea of individuality. The society controls your emotions, language, the natural world, and memories. Memories are personal to only you, no two people have the same memories. Emotions are how you yourself feel about something, and language is a way to express them. The natural world lets you know your place and how things are. When the society removes all these aspects of life, it removes individuality.

Jonas' community controls it citizens mentally and physically. The community controls its citizens mentally by controlling their word choice, and making them think they are all the same. By controlling someone's word choice you can influence the way they think. Also making everyone think that they are the same can play a huge factor in controlling people. For example, Jonas is taught that everyone is the same and that is the best way. It is not until Jonas starts his training as the new Receiver that he realizes that everyone is different. The community controls the citizens physically by giving them the pills and the sameness. The pills stop puberty which allows the elders to make decisions without being constantly questioned. The Sameness is also a huge factor in controlling people. If everything looks the same and you think everything the same, then in your head everything is the same. All of these forms of control eventually lead up to the keystone of control. The people's faith in the elders. Since the elders are the leaders of the community, and if everyone 100 percent trusts in them, then they control the entire community.

This creates a fear of Standing out which creates conformity. In addition, this creates a fear of questioning things that are widely accepted (rebelling). To explain this by them taking the pills and not experiencing the stirrings they don't have a time period in their life to truly figure out who they are. To explain if kids our age did not branch off into our groups like we have then we would be just like this community because every single person would follow in the reflection of their leaders(mr johnson) and we would be more like robot than humans.

Jonas' community control its citizen and create conformity by removing the natural world and replacing it with a well-controlled civilization. In Ch.1 pg 2, it shows how their world is controlled through a PA system. The system reminds them of the rules and when to abide it. Chapter 3, pg 21 states that birthmother's have very low status. This is a great example of how they are removing some parts of nature, such as having the right to give birth. Chapter 4 shows how mirrors were rarely used in their society. This defines how their society STRONGLY believe in conformity and wants everyone to be the same. I can connect communism and partially oligarchy with their "government" since they are ruled by a group(oligarchy) and they want similarity in their society(communism).

The Elders in Jonas' community are the ones that have the most Power and Control over everyone else. They make the decisions for everyone and the citizens trust in the Elders in making the right decisions for them. This can be related to what Alexander Hamilton had done when the electoral college was created. He did not believe that the American citizens were smart enough to make their own decisions, therefore he created the electoral vote. This is similar to the Elders making decisions for the community because they did not trust that the citizens were going to make the right ones. This creates sameness.

The people in Jonas' community are always watched by the elders to make sure they don't do anything different. The Committee of Elders gives them a very strict vocabulary to follow and they are not allowed to ask questions. Also they have to take pills to control their stirrings for one another. The elders choose everyone's jobs, who they will marry, and who their children will be. This is how Jonas' community controls its citizens and creates conformity.
