It is not until Jonas starts his training as the new Receiver that he realizes that everyone is different. The community controls the citizens physically by giving them the pills and the sameness. The pills stop puberty which allows the elders to make decisions without being constantly questioned. The Sameness is also a huge factor in controlling people. If everything looks the same and you think everything the same, then in your head everything is the same. All of these forms of control eventually lead up to the keystone of control. The people's faith in the elders.
