ABC7 CHICAGO SALUTES: REILLY ELEMENTARY

June 15, 2013 (CHICAGO) --ABC7 Chicago Salutes Reilly Elementary in Chicago's Avondale community.

The 7th-grade students in that community wanted to improve their neighborhood park, Parkview Park. So, as part of a class project, they broke out into teams, and each team came up with a new design for the park.

They presented their models, reached out to adults and an elected official, and shared their ideas with those who would listen. Their teachers, Betty Garcia and Mario Rueda, say they are proud of the students because they have learned that the park is expected to be renovated in the Spring of 2014.

So, ABC7 Chicago Salutes Reilly Elementary for making a difference in its community!

Data 5 - Interview from my neighborhood

So I had done some digging around in the neighborhood and asked some people weather they think the construction in the park is a good thing or a bad thing. The results I got were mostly the same. Like for instance, my friend Alejandra Sanchez thinks the construction in the park is a great thing. I had asked her why and she said because the park was getting destroyed and messy. I had asked other people the same question around the neighborhood, well technically my friends, and they mostly came up with the same or similar results. My friend Alexander Castro also said that this new construction will probably attract more people and make the gangs go away dude to crowds. I had then asked them, "wouldn't the gang-bangers have more of an opportunity to bang when there is more people?". He then said not if they stick together. I had told him to think about his statement before he says anything. The other people I had interviewed said they really don't have an opinion on the construction going on.

So I had interviewed some of my classmates from school and asked them if a park should have my park ideas ( Gigantic water fountain, track court, basketball court, etc.). I had got some feedback from my classmate named Tyrone. He said that he agreed with everything I had and he also inputed for me to add a football field. I told him that the park was to small and even if we did increase the size, it still wouldn't work. Now I interviewed my partner Mayda and she said we should add a swimming pool, or kitty pool. My counter argument against that was there is no space. I showed her the park layout on google maps (Overveiw). She still disagreed for some apparent reason and said that if would fit and I told her "With all the other stuff were adding, It won't fit". She then said it will which I had then left to interview my teacher and he agreed with the options I had, but made a great point on how it to get the blacktop made, how to get filtered water through the fountain, and putting some recycling bins around the park.
