ECONORG Journey: Trainee to Executive

I first began my ECONORG journey as a CORE or trainee in 2018. I was a freshman and I was unsure of myself and my journey, but ECONORG helped me piece that together. From being a trainee, my vision and mission solidified, and I realized that I wanted to be in this organization and contribute to it-- especially to the Young Economists' Convention. I was able to satisfy my advocacy of ensuring decent work, quality education, and partnership for the goals.

I felt deeply moved to make changes since I was a CORE. I wanted to have better work conditions without compromising the quality of the output. As the EVP for Linkages, I focused on internal and administrative matters of the YEC, aside from my making external connections with possible sponsors, partners, etc. I worked closely with the YEC's Commissioner and made this year a successful revival of the YEC through the Brown Bag Session, the Young Economists' Policy Initiative (YEPI), and the Young Economists' International Convention. And YEC, I believe, strongly embodies my advocacy of quality education for all.

As a new Lasallian Senior High School student, DLSU opened to me opportunities I didn't know I had. The passive mindset I didn't know I had before turned into one that was conscious of my potential impact onto society, and the responsibility that comes with that. With this, my friends and I started a small business that was sustainable in both profits and the environment, and meant to cater to a growing need in the toiletry market. We wanted to ensure that our business would reflect the Lasallian values. Personally, I wanted this to reflect my interest in sustainable communities and responsible consumption and production.

Investments: Landbank Employees and Associates Multi-Purpose Cooperative (LEAMCO)

My parents connected me to LEAMCO and gave the option to help this cooperative based in La Trinidad. LEAMCO helped farmers and families of farmers earn income outside of income from produce. By selling non-perishable, homemade, and safe goods such as detergents, soaps, multi-purpose cleaners, and insect repellants, farmers not only grew side incomes to sustain their daily spendings, but also allowed them to reinvest this into their farms and grow better produce. LEAMCO is very small and has little to no documentation. Meets were purely physical and involved a very humble gathering. But the food was always freshly grown and the people were very welcoming of investors such as myself who not only contribute monetary assistance but also management expertise. I focused on contributing basic accounting practices and tutoring the use of technological devices when I am present in gatherings. This program embodies reduced inequalities while maintaining a sustainable community.

The ‘Buhay sa Gulay’ project site was in my Barangay of residence and I was able to participate after having been told of the opportunity. I've always had an interest in gardening, especially crop gardening, but I was never able to do this in Manila alongside my studies. This program is meant to help women beneficiaries of the 4Ps where profit from harvests will go to these families. I, alongside other volunteers, assisted in harvesting and logistics. This project calls to my advocacy on sustainable cities and communities, sustainable consumption and production, no poverty, and zero hunger, among others.

The pandemic wasn't only the "shock" I've received as I pursue my undergraduate studies. I felt constantly unprepared by the skills demanded in the market, and I failed to connect this to my personal advocacies. I didn't want to work just to work. I wanted to work alongside my beliefs. I was accepted into the SPARTA Scholarship by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for the Data Science pathway in order to pursue what links passion to my work. Data Science is the visual application of statistics and, to a certain extent, economics. To me, being accepted into this program gave me more motivation to be in the field I am right now, and being in this field will let me participate in dialogue that concerns not just the economy, but society as a whole-- as powered by data.

I wanted to be a productive member of society and help in social causes, but I didn't know where to start. ASSIST helps in all SGDs all over Asia, and I was able to never have to choose between one or either advocacy. They understood the interrelatedness of the SDGs to one another and made projects that focused on one or either, but touched on multiple others. I believe ASSIST is an NGO that will let you touch on all advocacies.

Thesis on the Formulation of a Labor Productivity Index

When we were first deciding on a topic, my groupmates and I wanted to ensure that we had the same focus in mind. We all found ourselves to be interested in labor economics, and felt that we wanted to add something to this specific field. We were all passionate about the economics of work, and with further research, landed on the decision to focus on making an individual labor productivity index. We believed that by defining productivity better and what it should encapsulate in both human qualities and human work output, we would be able to erect policies that better consider all these factors. Ultimately, we wished for better work conditions that take into account the socio-demographic reality of workers.

I was able to participate in SIGLOC which was a program that focused on the impacts of the pandemic on global supply chains, and in turn, how these global supply chains would spell out changes in the domestic economy and culture. The program aimed to cultivate a global mindset for not only young economists, but in various fields as the reality of the pandemic encapsulates all facets of society. I was grouped with multinationals who shared their insights with me, and helped me understand what a "broader perspective" truly means which related to partnering for our goals while the program itself was more on ensuring sustainable cities and communities, and decent work and economic growth.
