School counseling has significantly impacted students' personal development and education. 
Using the ASCA National Model's four components, Rowley, Stroh, and Sink (2005) reported that elementary counselors are most likely to use guidance curriculum materials related to the personal/affective domain. The guidance curriculum is based on a program called Student Success Skills, which is one of the few programs that has been evaluated. Although this is mostly implemented in elementary schools, middle school students have shown effective outcomes as well. 
Individual counseling was the most effective form versus other methods for both adults and children. This is used more in high schools to help students with future career development and personal goals. Responsive services focus on helping students with immediate issues, concerns, and needs. Research shows that elementary students have the most significant effect and high schoolers benefit. Overall, studies show that schools with fully implemented counseling programs are very successful and have higher engagement, satisfaction, and grades. The students have better relationships with their teachers, feel safer, and believe their education is more relevant and vital to their futures. 
I only remember seeing the school counselor once or twice during my high school years. She wasn't engaged and never left the counselor's office. If she had been more involved with individual counseling, I would have been more open to applying to more colleges and finding more options for future career plans.

It has always been a goal of mine to advocate for students that don't have the support they need. I want to be a counselor to significantly impact students in all aspects of the profession. My responses suggested a moderate automatic preference for Black people over White people. The results are based on the measurements of the association between White and Black people concepts and evaluations of good and bad. Studies show that when things in our minds are closely related, we react more quickly. During the test, it was difficult to go back and forth between white or black and good and bad, but I enjoyed the challenge. Similar to the first IAT, this test measured light skin, dark skin, good and bad. I struggled to recognize the dark skin pictures from the light skin pictures but eventually got the hang of it. After taking the first IAT, I also noticed that I became comfortable with this test and made very few mistakes when differentiating good and bad with light skin and dark skin. The school counselor competency assessment is designed to provide a simple tool to measure understanding of the school counseling profession. Although my results were not unexpected, I appreciate being reminded of my strengths and weaknesses. I felt most profound in the mindsets section of the assessment. I think my power in this area is because I have had the opportunity to display effective collaborations with stakeholders and families and ensure quality resources to ensure a good education for students K-8. There were areas of improvement, such as legal and ethical issues. I believe there is always room for improvement in this area.
