FROM GROUP 3: How mattering is part of social justice in our own classrooms: Tutoring always before and after school, not letting children fall behind. Not giving up on students. Hard to keep expectations with students with low attendance. It is the hardest part. Allow students to express themselves in their native language, so they understand they matter, and their voices can be heard. Schools as mirrors: How we manage our schools can go different ways. It’s our job to model for them how to support each other and grapple with struggles. Our students are lucky in our own schools. They don’t have racial tensions at our sites. We can model for them self care. Prepare our students to move to other contexts with less support, with language in English language.

How intentional is the Board and Admin of SFUSD explicit about abolitionist teaching? As teachers on the ground, it's challenging to bring about this way of teaching when standardized testing, pacing guides, and completion of district requirements stay in place.
