Instead of fleeing from Athens to escape his punishment Socrates chose to instead drink poison and take his own life because he wanted to die a citizan of athens. Many of his students continued on with his work and believing his ideas, but were never sentenced as he was.

He was the one who realized that the sun did not revolve around the earth by comparing the moon which he also discovered wasn't flat but round and rocky and had phases and the discovered that Venus also had phases which showed that it revolved around the sun.
