In the beginning of the novel you can tell that Marjane is very close to God, she constantly talks to him. When Marjane's father goes out to take photos of people demonstrating, on page 29-33, he does not come back for a while and she starts to worry. When Marjane's father returns she tells them about a widow whose husband dies from cancer but everyone around says he is a martyr, the widow then starts to protest with them. Marjane's parents find this funny but she does not understand why they are laughing. Marjane then realizes why she is ashamed to ride in her dad's car, it is because of social classes. When Marjane goes skipping with some of her older friends she gets caught and has a fight with her mother. At the beginning of the last chapter, Marjane starts to act different, she says that nothing scares her anymore. Marjane punches the principal at her school and gets expelled which leads to her leaving because her mom is scared that the government will end up killing her, so her mom ends up sending her away to Austria.
