What have you learnt about cyber issues in Singapore?

As technology advance in 21st century, the concerns related to cyber wellness had been on a rise. In Singapore, the number of students negatively affected by technology had increased over the years, thus highlighting the importance of educating cyber wellness.

Currently students are facing 5 issues on Internet.

Balanced use of ICT

Students lack the knowledge of using Internet in moderation.

Students might navigate well in the virtual world but not in real life

Online identity and expression

Bolder in expressing their comments, thinking that their identity would be kept anonymous

Sharing too much personal info of themselves

Lack of awareness (others might not reveal their true identity online)

Etiquette

Students might not be able to differentiate the interaction between virtual and real life (Words accepted online may seem extremely rude when said in real life)

Cyber bullying

Hurting a weaker person repeatedly and intentionally (Repeatedly does not mean that the cycle has to repeat but it is repeatable)

Online relationships

Underage students get on dating apps, thus getting themselves exposed to dangers online

All these reinforces the reasons of teaching cyber wellness in class. Therefore as a teacher, I would try to catch up with the latest trends. Cyber wellness should not be taught in a way where students “just follow the rules”. Only when a teacher truly understands the psychic behind all these behaviors then would they be able to connect and suggest the best solution to the students. The skills to help students navigate in real life is no longer sufficient, while the skills to navigate online becomes essential.

What have you learnt about cyber issues in Singapore?

Technology is a very big part of our lives now. Children nowadays spend a big part of their free time on various online platforms.
As an educator, we have to stay in touch with the technology trend. As a young educator, all the more we should be in touch with technology, so we wont be caught by surprise when students are using online platforms to perform certain acts, and we would know how to counter it.
Apart from listing out all the do's and don'ts while being online to the students, we teachers we should adapt and learn to look at issue objectively.
As the current generation have been in touch with technology from a very young age, it might be difficult for them to see the harm they might get themselves into while being online as they are so adapt to it. We have to get them to be aware and know what is right and wrong to do online.

Mr Chong summed up the preventive approach we can take to tackle the problems we mas educators might face.
1. Education

it should be continuous and relevant.

It should not be just knowledge but also practical skills and good values that they can apply online.

On top of that, critical thinking skills is also very important. We should constantly challenge our students to think critically so as to train them to be able to do so too online.

At last, we should never sweep the cyber-wellness issues under the carpet. As it would have a great impact on the student if he/she had a bad experience onlinee.

2. Keep up with the trend and development:

This is important and we should always stay relevant.

The most effective way to keep up with the trend is always to engage the students with conversation regarding their online experiences.

The internet domain is crucial for teachers as domain knowledge gives you a common ground with students and it can also help you builds on your teacher-student relationship.

Teachers need to constantly engage with the newest technology available. We can also try the new apps and devices. Once we understand the side kicks and usefulness of the devices or platform, we can better understand the students and why they are always using it.

We can then skip giving traditional rules like dont talk to strangers online and we will be able to give more relevant tips.

Last but not least, I agree that us as teachers should walk the talk. Students can always do a search online and they will be able to find our social media accounts. If we do not set a good example online, student then would not heed our advises no matter how good or relevant it is.

What have you learnt about cyber issues in Singapore?

A coin has two sides, same as to the use of technology nowadays. Besides allowing the students to learn beyond their curriculum, there are some risks in using it as well.
Some of the side effects include spending excessive amount of time online as compared to real life and having too much online interactions that the real life enagagements are greatly reduced and affected. Other than unable to balance up between the online world and real world, cyber bullying is one of the common issues of using the internet which needs to raise awareness of.
As an educator, it is important for us to inculcate our stud ties with the right set of values and teach them to be able to think critically in order to make sure that our students do not fall into those traps especially cyber bullying. There are a few things which we can do such as to stay updated with the technology, be in path with our students so that we know what they are up to and how their 'world' is like, hence it eases the process of helping them when in need.
Therefore, it explains why is it important for teachers to not stop learning to catch up with the ever updating technology in this 21st century. The new skills that we learn not only will keep us in path of the world but also more importantly, to understand our students better and be able to help them.

Cyber wellness is a serious issue in Singapore, since Singapore is already in the technology era, and students could access the internet from a very young age, starting to use the ICT tools without knowing the possible consequence if ICT tools were being abused.

There are five main issues with cyber wellness in Singapore, which are:
1. Balanced Use of ICT
Students in Singapore often could not balance their usage of time between the online world and the real-life world. Often being addicted to online games and other online social media. Students also are afraid to seek help when they are in this situation, letting the situation control them instead of controlling the situation. Being stuck in a vicious cycle without the ability to get hold of the situation.

2. Online Identity and Expression
Students are not clear on to what extent they should keep their privity to, which posed a potential risk of revealing too many personal information online.
There are also problems about not knowing who is at the other end of the computer, to both students and the one chatting with them. Some students enter a number older than their actual age in their profile, to access a website before their supposed age. There are also students who got scammed by another person online.

3. Netiquette
Since that posting comments online is instant, sometimes the comment is being posted too fast without given a second thought, and it might get offensive and inconsiderate.

4. Cyber bullying
Cyber bullying is also a big issue in Singapore, as one in four secondary school students admits that they have been a cyber bully, and One in five primary school children, too, reported being cyber bullied. The static number is huge, and cyberbullying can cause a higher chance of students self-harming themselves, as they are traumatised or are in stress.

5. Online Relationships
Students also might be engaged in online dating, which as mentioned, "you do not know who is at the other end of the computer", and things might go during the process.

Other than these five main problems, there are also other problems such as students intentionally or accidentally going into inappropriate websites with pornography or other inappropriate content.

Thus, teachers have to careful on cyber issues when guiding students to access the internet. There are some preventive measures, such as constantly teaching students of the common areas that they should note when surfing the internet, and teaching students how to be critical, knowing whats right and what is wrong, and they can analyse on their own if the content they saw is appropriate.

When students are already on the wrong track, we could also guide them back by helping them to find real-life activities which students are interested in, to replace online activities. Also, we could get in touch with student's close ones, getting together to help students out of the situation.

In conclusion, students in Singapore are now born in a world full of ICT around the, but they might be pro in using ICT, but might not be in the proper way. Thats why teacher need to come in and guide students to learn how to use ICT in various aspects, and what are the ways that ICT should not be used.
