The many handicaps in Harrison Bergeron symbolize how society is limited. They are an obstacle that prevent human society from becoming its fullest potential. At first, the story just explains what the handicaps are and the intended purpose of each. As the story continues, however, readers can see for themselves the impact the handicaps have on society, especially George. However, later on, Harrison Bergeron rips off his handicaps. This could symbolize how by taking off the handicaps he represents what society can be, and shows how the handicaps are the main object blocking society from taking the path to individuality.
Additionally, the handicaps could also symbolize the steps the government took to achieve a society in which everyone is equal. The government creates an idea of what they consider average. Then, those above that level are given handicaps that prohibit their thinking and movement. This brings them down towards an average level, and thus aiding in making everyone equal. Therefore, the handicaps could symbolize equality in a way, as they are the main reason the government was so successful in achieving total equality in the society.

With society in shackles, Harrison Bergeron is determined to have unfair advantages that ordinary people do not. Harrison Bergeron is perceived as a genius and athlete that's 7 feet tall. With his unfair advantages, the United States Handicapper General decides to negate his dominance over society by making sure he wasn't any stronger, smarter, or better looking than anyone else. As the story progresses Harrison shows society what mankind is capable of achieving, Harrison sets a precedent when he was shown dancing and expressing his own unique character on television.

"George, while his intelligence was way above normal, had a little mental handicap radio in his ear. He was required by law to wear it at all times. It was tuned to a government transmitter. Every twenty seconds or so, the transmitter would send out some sharp noise to keep people like George from taking unfair advantage of their brains."

This quote shows how the government forces anyone they consider to be above average in intelligence to wear an earpiece that inhibits their thinking. It explains how the handicaps symbolize the oppression of the government on society. The government has done their best in making everyone seem equal, and fit to their standard of normal. The continuous sounds that transmit from the handicap prevent people from actually using their brain to its fullest potential. This helps prevent rebellions and such, showing how this symbolizes how society is denied any individuality by the government.
