Ray Bradbury in his futurism novel Fahrenheit 451, shows how the government influences human nature by keeping religious beliefs from them as no one can say their opinion or learn new things without getting into trouble and even risking their lives. This is evident in society today by how religions such as Judaism during World War 2 and Christian churches burning represents a way of hatred and hostility towards certain groups.

Islamophobia is the dislike of Islam or Muslims, especially as a polical force. Suzanne Barakat explains how we should not live in fear of certain people/groups or else it could lead to harm or death (which she explains of how it killed her brother). She tries to point out that we should live in a peaceful society where we shouldn't judge people based on what others like them did.

She does this by giving her life story of how she lived and was treated by her family and country. She goes on to say that she never felt safe and wishes that no one goes through the terrible things that she went through. Later on, she goes into detail on the many terrorist attacks this religion has made and says that it will get worse.

Not Sharing the Ideas of Religion

In the science fiction novel, Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, many characters endure the nature of never discussing their ideas about life and religion. They at no time had the experience of speaking their minds and do not plan on doing so either. For example, the sentence “I’ve always said, poetry and suicide and crying and awful things, poetry, and sickness; all that mush! Now I’ve had it proven to me. You’re nasty, Mr. Montag, you’re nasty!” (Bradbury 97) which is said by Mrs. Bowles, gives a clear picture to readers that these characters believe that speaking one's mind is a sin and can never be forgiven. This demonstrates how crucial hate is in their life and how people react to certain opinions. It also expresses the influences that each character has based on the amount of information that they’re gaining from the government. This here is a form of brainwashing to make sure they will never be as or more powerful than this government body, which is why they hide books of religion and the real world from the citizens. Guy Montag goes to show the truth in this by saying, “Nobody listens anymore. I can’t talk to the walls because they’re yelling at me. I can’t talk to my wife; she listens to the walls. I just want someone to hear what I have to say.” (Bradbury 78). The government has taught their world that sharing religious beliefs is evil to the point where people are scared to be around those who go against the government. And character’s who try to prove a point, such as Montag, turn out to go unheard of. By the end of the day, it seems as though the only voice being heard is the government’s, giving an unfairness point of view from generation to generation. Those who wish to not violate the government’s laws end up hiding in hopes to never be heard from again. This does not stop Montag whatsoever, but in fact makes him work harder to gain acknowledgment from others around him to understand where he is coming from.

The Effects of Speaking Out About the World

One of the biggest issues in Ray Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451, is when people speak about the world when they’re forced not to. These citizens undergo disturbing abuse, both physically and mentally. Seeing that they do not discuss things, others take it the wrong way. Most of them were taught that what the government says is true and everyone should abide by their rules, but this is not the case. Their government tells them lies to make sure these residents will not be more powerful than them. The sentence, “I’m one of the innocents who could have spoken up and out when no one would listen to the ‘guilty,’ but I did not speak and thus became guilty myself.” (Bradbury 78) creates a feeling of remorse that Faber had for himself as he discusses with Montag how he felt guilt-tripped for feeling the way he felt about the world while the government was teaching them differently. He was told that what he believed was a sin and should never be spoken of again which made him go into hiding so he would not risk getting punished or killed. Doing so caused the government to gain more control by scaring and propagandizing the lives that their people live. This is why the government and Captain Beatty are very demanding towards Montag due to the fact that he isn’t afraid to stand up for what he believes in. All Montag wants to do is make their world better and have everyone live in peace where no one tells them what they can and can not do. Montag, for example, says, “Did you hear them, did you hear these monsters talking about monsters? Oh God, the way they jabber about people and their own children and themselves and the way they talk about their husbands and the way they talk about war,...” (Bradbury 94) gives a very considerable explanation for how this government has brainwashed this society into giving bland excuses for how the world is controlled. These people oversee how they live because they’re afraid of what could happen if they disobey the rules. Therefore, the amount of fear and despair of defending how these people feel about the world concludes in being more worried about the consequences of their actions so they’re then forced to keep quiet.

Life With Terror and Violence

In society today, similar to the civilization in Fahrenheit 451, we undergo religious hatred and violent attacks. These involve deathly acts that are carried out depending on motivations and goals that may have been either influenced or based on a religious character. It is said that there are roughly 4,200 religions in the world, thus creating many different beliefs. With there being so many diverse views, violence occurs and increases. Many people in a certain religion believe that others should follow with what they believe in--but some feel that this is irrelevant, resulting in chaos. Chas Danner and Adam K. Raymond give a thorough article, “What to Know About the Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting,” summarizing the acts of terrorism due to a shooting in a Pittsburgh synagogue. The man who executed this crime said, “They’re committing genocide to my people.” (Bowers), meaning that his hateful crimes were out of anger as a result of racism and religious hate by, who he says, the Jewish members of the synagogue. Another form of religious hate by terrorism is the Sutherland Springs, Texas church shooting that killed 26 innocent people. “Why the Right is Obsessed With the Sutherland Springs Shooter’s Atheism,” adds that Russell Moore of the Southern Baptist Convention says “The goal the gunman sought, to terrorize worshipers, has been attempted constantly over the centuries around the world by cold, rational governments and terrorist groups--all thinking that they could, by the trauma of violence, snuff out churches, or at least intimidate those churches into hiding from one another.” (Moore). This means that this gunman may have gotten his idea from previous murderers, hoping to live up to their horrendous actions. With that being said, as the years go by, terrorist attacks increase excessively. The amount of fatalities from 1994 to 2001 rose from 4% to 78% in a time span of only 7 years. According to the article “Introduction to Religious Terrorism,” K. Lee Lerner and Brenda Wilmoth Lerner state, “Acts of religious terrorism are often carried out by those who accept that their death is a divinely mandated sacrifice or offering to a higher power or god.” (Lerner) recapping that some violent acts of terrorism are for religious purposes to show their worth and think that what they’re doing is good and not sinful. Suicide bombers, for example, believe that their acts earn them a tribute of respect among the living, and a superior place in the afterlife (Lerner). Human nature plays a very important role in this by seeing if these attackers nature are changeable or not. As reported by “Basic Human Nature: Can It Be Changed?” the old cliche that says that it cannot be changed can actually be proven wrong. Recent studies believe that it actually can, but to a certain extent based on the rapid changes in human genomes in response to the pressures of civilization (Ridley). Along with these terrorist attacks comes the brutal aggression of war. Christopher Mewett’s article “Understanding War’s Enduring Nature Alongside It’s Changing Character,” war is defined to have a feedback cycle in motion; political, social, and technological change affect the ways that wars are fought, and these wars alter the way that society and politics are organized (Mewett). War seems to be natural to human beings in a way that shows how common it’s been in the history of our world as specified by the article “How Natural is War to Human Beings?” Steve Taylor, a psychologist, proves that the world that we live in is indeed not at peace and grows worse as time goes by. Chronic raiding and altercation characterize life in a state of nature (Pinker). Ultimately, our world is under fire with cruelty and destructiveness yet it seems that no matter how hard we try, nothing changes.
