Per Dr. Stace Amabisca:

This fall, our senior administration made the decision to eliminate EMCC's for-credit ESL classes with the rationale that it has declining enrollment. In its place, non-credit/community ed ESL classes are being offered which of course don't qualify for financial aid OR tutoring, nor do they lead to any college credit (obviously). The initiative now is to create new non-credit ESL classes that are specifically designed for "workforce development"--i.e., EMCC will work with community businesses and operations to create non-credit ESL classes for their employees, something like a certificate program.

The current non-credit ESL classes are essentially open enrollment--that is, students can sign up for whatever level they want without having to take the CELSA for placement. And of course, being non-credit, there is essentially no homework or accountability.

If a student shows up wanting to take ESL, they are given the choice:

1) take the non-credit program, whatever class they want

2) go to GCC (our closest sister college still offering credit-ESL)

3) take ALT 100 (which is NOT designed as an ESL class!)
