The artist I am referring to here is different from what most Indonesians understand as a “celebrity.”

When talking about artists, I always remember the name Vincent Willem Van Gogh, a famous painter who never experienced the glory of his artworks that are now worth a fortune. Van Gogh’s works only became famous after his death.

Description:

Van Gogh was a Dutch painter who belonged to the Post-Impressionist movement. He was born on March 30, 1853, in Zundert, the Netherlands, and died on July 29 in Auvers-sur-Oise, France.

During his lifetime, he was often described as a foolish man who tried and failed to learn how to paint. Not only that, he was also very poor and suffered greatly.

At first, he failed in love, which caused him deep suffering in life. He failed to become a “normal” person. His heartbreak destroyed his mentality and confidence. Before becoming a painter—or rather, before becoming passionate about painting—he worked as a Protestant missionary in southern Belgium.

His duty was in a coal mining area, where he witnessed the harsh reality of human suffering and the truth about his own faith. Seeing human misery, he wanted to experience the same suffering in the name of humanity. He eventually lost his faith and began to paint.

Wandering from one place to another, Van Gogh lived in poverty. He spent his whole life painting, even though people considered his art terrible. He also suffered from psychotic episodes and delusions. Toward the end of his life, he was treated in a mental hospital in Auvers-sur-Oise, France. He suffered from depression and ultimately shot himself, dying two days later.

After his death—and the rise of discussions about madness, especially the understanding of psychosis—his paintings became famous and were recognized as high-level Post-Impressionist art. Sadly, Van Gogh never knew that his paintings would one day be worth billions.
