Although the U.S only has 4% of the worlds population, they have over 25% of the worlds prisoners. On top of that African Americans and other minorities are 4x more likely to be incarcerated than white people for commiting the same crime. Added to the unequal racial status in prisons, the abuse and unjust treatment of incarcerated people goes unnoticed and blind to the public. Life after prison isnt any better either, released prisoners are expected to get back on their feet once theyre no longer behind bars. But how is that possible when the U.S denies people with a record to qualify for welfare, student loans, public housing, food stamps, the right to vote and intentionally making it more difficult for them to get a job. Ex-inmates are denied several civil liberties and are often rejected from getting a job. A study shows that this issue mainly effects black ex-convicts rather than white ones. Incarceration also effects families and relationships, specifically parent to child relationships. As children in the book, the citizens are conditioned to think and believe certain things, to think like everyone else. Theyre conditioned to not fear death, to not believe in families or having relationships, to not have any other emotion besides happy, to take soma whenever some kind of inconvenience occurs, to take birth control, and forces them to believe many other things and have the same view as everyone else. Instead of only discussing how the prisoners get treated, she also mentioned how its also a "Volatile and Dangerous Workplace" for the prison officials. She said "Like prisoners, correction officers also end up injured and killed behind bars and, also like prisoners, they too experience high rates of suicide as a result of the terrible conditions."
