Literacy is the understanding of communication in the world. This can constitute both written, verbal and nonverbal language. Knowing and learning to communicate then leads to reading, writing, speaking. Without the knowledge of communication and how to give and receive the information literacy can not occur. We as educators think of literacy as reading and writing, but when broken to fundamentals these skills rely on basic understandings of communication.

Disciplinary literacy is the weaving of reading, writing, and communicating across different content areas. As an AP English Literature teacher, my students weave these three parts into every part of this course. In the video Dr. Pearson states that literature is "man's quest to learn how to interact with other human beings..." My goal in my course is for students to understand this definition of the importance of literature and to "learn to interact with other human beings" through reading, writing, and communicating with one another.

As stated by Dr. Pearson, "Each discipline has its own body of knowledge [and rule of evidence]."
Literature is my discipline.

Human interaction clearly demonstrates inquiry and acquisition of knowledge motivated by interest and need. When we create a more natural format for students to learn, they are more apt to acquire and retain the learning. My learning experience as a child was firmly rooted in the silo method, "children get our your reading book, children its 12:30 get out your math book." I am absolutely encouraged by educators today and their willingness to weave reading, writing and language tools into the content areas to maximize effectiveness in their learning.

I strongly feel children should LOVE reading for reading, but they also need to be able to read to be successful in all areas of school.

Disciplinary literacy is the theory that all subjects--math, science, social studies, etc.--have their own language and specific way in which the material of the subject needs to be read, comprehended, and ultimately used and that each teacher is individually responsible to teach the student how to use the language within their (the teachers) area of of expertise not only relegated to the ELA teacher. ELA skills are taught across all subject areas.

Disciplinary literacy is applying foundational ELA skills into other disciplines; it's knowing which skills/strategies need to be applied to understand and communicate particular content knowledge. Examples of literacy strategies in Science would be cause and effect, understanding and applying sequence, and formulating questions for inquiry purposes. Examples of literacy strategies in Math would be analysis, reasoning, sequencing and problem solving.

From a student’s perspective, Disciplinary Literacy is the ability to be able to successfully read, understand, write and communicate (orally as well as in writing) in each and every academic discipline. In order for students to learn these skills teachers of each academic subject need to demonstrate and teach and ensure that students learn how literacy “works” in their given discipline.

Disciplinary literacy is being fluent in how to acquire knowledge make it useful in real world situations while using meta cognition and other skills.
Now that I have acquired some knowledge on the subject I can expand and clarify some of what I stated before.
Disciplinary literacy in my discipline of Social Studies is to teach to help students to explore and examine the way it happened and apply the various notions or not in their day to day life. Yes, even to develop new notions around the discipline of social studies.
To invest in what Releah Gossett Lent writes in her book, This Is Displinary Literacy,(2016)., I want deeper learning in social studies with rigor.
Each discipline uses reading strategies, but no all strategies taught need to be or should be used when teaching social studies.
Some social studies could be taught using monologue rehearsal or right out play acting.
In all disciplines a student should learn to read, write, think, reason, listen, do and use meta cognition.
