What does this mean: Isolation is when an individual person or hero is part of the isolation game and they are on their own. The individual is separated from others.

Examples from the text: When Arthur was at Eel Marsh House, the house was away from the town called Crythin Gifford and you could only get there by taking the causeway at certain times. "Eel Marsh is far from any neighbour" (Pg.30). Mr Bentley says this, giving a description about Eel Marsh house and how isolated it is. "Outside all was quiet, so that all I heard was the sound of my footsteps". This shows that nothing surrounded the house and there were no sounds surrounding the house, as it is isolated from people.

A supernatural occurence is something that is beyond scientific understanding and the laws of nature. Throughout the story, there were many supernatural events that occurred. An example of this was when the protagonist Kipps went into the nursery room, and witnessed the eerie sight of a rocking chair swaying. “As I watched, stared until; I could stare no harder, it rocked gently and with gradually decreasing speed, in the any such way a chair will continue to rock for a time after someone has just got out of it. But no one had been there.” This quote from the book reinforces a gothic genre through the use of supernatural events

What does this mean:
Mystery builds suspense as the reader, as well as the protagonist, is afraid of the unknown.

Examples: I took of the woman showed me enough to recognise that she was suffering from some terrible wasting disease, for not only was she extremely pale, even more than a contrast with the blackness of her garments could account for, but the skin and, it seemed, only the thinnest layer of flesh was tautly stretched and strained across her bones.

What does this mean?
In the following passage Kipps is frightened by the mysterious sounds and screams i=he is hearing in the fog.

Examples: Then I realised that the mist played tricks with sound as well as sight, for not only did the noise of the trap stay further away from me for longer than I might of expected but also it seemed to come not from directly behind me, straight down the causeway path, but instead to be away to my right, out of the marsh.... And then I heard another cry, a shout, a terrified sobbing - it was hard tp decipher - but with horror I realised that it came from a child, a young child.

Examples: “However, towards the end of it, and on hearing some slight rustle behind me, I half turned, discreetly, and caught a glimpse of another mourner, a woman, who must have slipped into the church after we of the funeral party had taken our places and who stood several rows behind and quite alone, very erect and still, and not holding a prayer book.”

Through the use of Mystery an atmosphere of tension is built. Through referencing “who stood several rows behind and quite alone, very erect and still, and not holding a prayer book.” This mystery of who the woman is and how she is very different to other mourners in the fact that she is making herself quite isolated and that she shows no typical features of a typical mourner and the fact that she carries no bible, when Arthur Kipps states “who stood several rows behind and quite alone”. This creates a sense of mystery as the woman has shown up out of nowhere, “...who must have slipped into the church after we…” These quotes show the mystery of the sudden appearance of the woman and later Arthur Kipps describes her as the woman in black, hinted to us in the beginning of the book though the title.

This is an example of a supernatural because Kipps cannot describe how the woman had vanished because it was seemingly an impossible occurrence.

"I crossed the room to the window, for perhaps the vandals had gained an entry here. It was tight-bolted and rusted over and the wooden bars were fast and firm. No one had entered here." This is an example of an inexplicable happening because there is no way the woman in black could have entered through the window because it was tightly bolted shut and rusted and it was impossible for anyone to enter.

"As I did so and within a few yards of it, I glanced up.

What does this mean?:
In the novel the Women in Black, mystery is one of the main techniques conveyed to the reader. Through using Gothic Literature/Mystery in the book it builds tension because of the unknown. Some people love the thrill of the unknown, some people love seeing all the clues that the characters have collected come together and some love the moment that they find out what happens in the end. Adding all these features into the book makes the novel more enjoyable, entertaining and thrilling.

Examples from the text:
"Who was she - or what - and how she had vanished, such questions I did not ask myself."
This quotation is the mystery that starts Arthur Kipps' doubts about the realness of the Woman in Black. Also, when he starts to become skeptical of whether or not the townspeople's reactions to his questions are about this matter.

"As I watched, stared until I could stare no harder, it rocked gently and with gradually decreasing speed, in the way such a chair will continue to rock for a time after someone has just got out of it."
This quote shows another mystery in the chapter 'In the Nursery'.

What does this mean?
Gothic Literature is sometimes built upon mystery, enslaving us to read on and find the answers to the unknown. Curiosity is a behaviour all humans experience, and adding the air of mystery to a novel, makes it all the more entertaining and enjoyable.

Examples from the text:
" He was silence for a moment...if trying to discover if their was any meaning...behind the question"
This demonstrates the reluctance of Mr Jerome to answer a simple question about the mysterious Woman in Black, to satisfy the curiosity of both the reader and Arthur.

“ Every hair on her body was on end, her ears were pricked, her tail erect, the whole of her tense, as if ready to spring. And she was emitting a soft, low growl from deep within her throat”
This encourages the reader to keep reading in order to discover what is behind the door. The limited information we are provided with and explicitly detailed description, create that infamous air of mystery we all love.

Inch by inch gasping for breath until just at the last of her body sunk I lunged out and grabbed the dog about the neck and hauled and strained and tugged with all the force I could, a strength I would never have dreamed I cold have summoned up born of terror and desperation; and after an agonising time, when we both fought for our lives against the treacherous quicksand that tried to pull both of us down into itself."

What does this mean?
The Woman in Black uses the technique of isolation to create tension between Arthur Kipps and Eel Marsh House. The eerie house itself is set far away from Crythin Gifford, on a raised part of land and surrounded by “plain, salt-bleached, grass and gravel”. The house, standing on its own, makes the reader question things about the house and the owner, for example “why was the house on its own” or “why did the owner choose to live here”.

Examples from the text:
The isolation of Eel Marsh is reinforced through the quote ”… I had never seen or conceivably have imagined, isolated, uncompromising but also, I thought, handsome”. Here Arthur Kipps is describing house, despite standing on its own, attracts him into discovering what it holds inside. Another example of isolation in the book is “The sense of space, the vastness of the sky above and on either side made my heart race”. Here, Kipps describing how the journey to the house made him feel isolated himself, away from the cities and towns. Reinforcing, the technique of isolation, the quote of "We had travelled for miles, and passed no farm or cottage, no kind of dwelling house at all, all was emptiness".

The element of supernatural are the core of most gothic novels. The supernatural describes the unexplainable events that occur, such as an inanimate objects moving or coming to life. This element of goth fiction is used in the novel Woman in Black largely. As Arthur Kipps ( the narrator) describes his spine-chilling ghost encounter from many years ago he uses elements of the supernatural to heighten the intensity of his story. “ Her appearance, even in the limpid sunshine and comparative warmth and brightness outdoors, was so pathetically wasted so pale and gaunt with disease.” From describing the appearance of the woman in black
