College was founded to serve as a white population in Aptos but also part of county. County has become Hispanic. Watsonville 95% Hispanic. Different institution from when we were founded. Need to serve our different community now. 
Name of college reflects change - the name of the college is our identity. How can we have an anti-colonial college with a name like Cabrillo.
Cabrillo was started in Watsonville - couldn't call it Santa Cruz because of geo-politics but 1959 Watsonville was not as Hispanic as it is now. 
Looking at AP/BPs and reviewing them with equity lens. 
We want students to know, feel and experience that they are part of Cabrillo and how do we create and identity to encourage that. 
Identity around of ethic of care that students feel positive about. 
Need to make sure everyone feels cared about. 
How do we integrate more into the Aptos campus. 
Needs to reflect in the materials we teach.

Relatively new, about 3 years old.

There is a review at least every three years. This reflects a nascent equity perspective, but needs update based on an expanding perspective.

Adding HSI to the mission explicitly is a start.

It should address the anti-racist ideas that we want to embrace. Currently about equity and inclusion.

Supporting values statements should be revisited. There is so much recognition of housing and food insecurity on campus and breaking down barriers to education, this could be more clearly reflected in the mission.

Everything starts from the mission. It affects how we look at data, program plans, etc. It is important to have it in the mission so that it will filter down.

Useful for the student to see it clearly stated.
Next Steps:
Process-wise,  a short term thing could be adding a dependent clause. The process to fully revise must be inclusive and can be time-consuming and take awhile. 

Where can we have these conversations to support some changes in the short term. Terrence says Institutional Effectiveness Committee (IEC) and the College Planning Committee (CPC). IEC would be a good place to start. CPC would be the next step.  This could happen in February. Faculty senate and student senate or also key. For a full revision, input from a much larger cross-section of the college. 

There is a tie to the name change... this would be a good conversation to integrate into that.

We can do a better job serving specific students. The mission statement talks about outcomes, but have we identified what are specific outcomes for specific populations in the community? We continue to maintain problematic distinctions between serving Latinx student only at Watsonville and not at Aptos, therefore Aptos feels 'off the hook' to serving these students. A student in Watsonville will most likely have to take classes at Aptos, starting off at Watsonville campus feeling welcomed and connected, then coming to Aptos campus and missing the welcome and connection. When the Scotts Valley campus was closed, we lost that identity with that part of the community. Sister campus in Salinas has done a good job with marketing their community campus. How do we integrate all these identities into a choreographed message (public image). How do we re-align our collective community identities. We noticed quality and equity are in the same sentence and think that equity should be its own point/sentence. In the classroom, in Math Victor would like to see leaders observe classes to create context for making decisions. what is going on in the classroom is an essential data set... seeing it in action is important. Many instructors in the Math department have put a lot of time into helping the students. There is still something missing. Hears criticism of the Math department. More insight might help leadership provide better support. 

"The further you are from the classroom, the easier it seems." Ethnographic approach, more qualitative data, looking at classroom materials. Contextual details that improve student experience and performance, but also improve instructor experience. 

Different levels of leadership: Every instructor is a leader in the classroom. Faculty senators who are instructors. Don't underestimate our own voices as leaders.

]]> 2021-01-20 22:41:40 UTC https://padlet.com/ginaanngarcia/sf5vwmp6ebo227bt/wish/1107958319 https://padlet.com/ginaanngarcia/sf5vwmp6ebo227bt/wish/1107962368 Curriculum & Co-curriculum: Hit or miss at Cabrillo College, we do not have an institutionalized system for achieving these college wide so it falls to the instructor.  Problematic, student could take the same course as another and have a completely different learning experience.  Not only is there no system in place, there’s no incentive, no consequences for not doing it, no accountability.  We don’t have enough people of color in our faculty to change the system.  We can ramp up outreach, we can change our massaging, but we also have to make sure there is support and resource in place to retain newly hired people of color.  Re academic support for students, how are we situating our language from deficit base/minded  to strength base teaching and learning, implementation, etc.
