Long ago the child death rate was high, so it was celebrated just to grow up. These koi shaped windsocks are also used to measure the direction of the wind. The direction of the wind is the opposite direction the streamers fly. For this activity, we are going to take our Koinobori and use a fan to make them fly.

The Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, also known as Tết Trung Thu, is a Vietnamese festival that celebrates the fall harvest, full moon, and the health and overall well-being of friends and family. The festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the Lunar Calendar, when it is a full moon and appears to be the biggest during the year. The Vietnamese believe that a full moon is representative of prosperity, and fullness of life. The purpose of this holiday is to give thanks for the harvest and to wish for good luck in the coming year. During the festival, communities come together and celebrate by having parades, lighting lanterns, watching lion dancing performances, and eating special foods like the moon cake. Tết Trung Thu, or Tết for short, is also a time for young children. In Vietnamese culture, children are emphasized strongly and are believed to have the strongest connection to the sacred and natural worlds in their purity and innocence.

Turkish Coffee

Turkish coffee has been around since 1540. The coffee is ground very fine and mixed with water. Traditionally the coffee is brewed using a pan filled with sand. The sand-filled pan allows for total control over the heat. The brewing can be adjusted by the depth of the coffee in the sand. The fine coffee grinds and water are add to a small pot, and placed in the sand. The sand creates an even heat, and the coffee foams to the top almost immediately. The small pot is removed and added to the sand three time and served in a small cup. This is an example of thermal energy, how the heat flows, and how the heat is transferred between the sand. Sand has a low heat transfer coefficient of 0.06 watts per square meter degree Celsius. This means it can retain heat for very long periods of time and explains why the sand in the pan can distribute heat evenly.

Mexican jumping beans are seed pods that have been inhabited by the larva of a small moth and are native to Mexico. The "bean" is usually tan to brown. It "jumps" when mildly heated. They are from the shrub Sebastiania pavoniana, often also referred to as "jumping bean".

What makes Mexican jumping beans jump?

First of all, a jumping bean is really a seed. It’s from a type of shrub that can be found clinging to rocky, dry slopes in the Mexican states of Sonora and Chihuahua.

A tiny moth larva inside makes a jumping bean jump. In the spring, when the shrub is flowering, moths lay their eggs on the shrub’s hanging seedpods. When the eggs hatch, tiny larvae bore into the immature green pods and begin to devour the seeds.
The pods ripen, fall to the ground and separate into three smaller segments, and those segments are what we call Mexican jumping beans. As the tiny larvae inside curl up and uncurl, they hit the capsule’s wall with their heads – and the bean jumps.
No one knows for sure why the larvae curl and uncurl, but it’s been observed that they move more as temperatures rise. It could be that the larvae are trying to get to a cooler spot on the hot ground where they can safely pupate into moths.

Do jumping beans really jump?
Experiment:

We would first start by handing out these coloring pages of the Maya goddess Ixchel (pronounced Ishchel). The children have the opportunity to decorate the picture in vibrant colors while the teacher discusses information. Maya people in Mexico and Central American sometimes refer to the moon as a goddess holding a rabbit. In this culture, the moon rises on a different place on the horizon every night, it looks as if it is hopping like a rabbit. The Maya also noticed that the Moon takes 29.5 days to go from a new moon to a full moon and back to a new Moon. Coincidentally, 29.5 days is also how long a rabbit is pregnant before it has babies thus the ties to the rabbit and the moon.

Another myth within the Maya culture that we will be talking about is the Hero Twins. Students can watch an introductory video before diving into the myth and activity.
In this story, one twin represents the moon and the other represents the sun. They are considered twins because, in the sky, the sun and moon look like they are a similar size. Even though the Moon is much smaller than the Sun, it is at just the right distance to look the same size as the Sun, which is much farther away. They are depicted as brothers to recognize that the sun and moon have a close relationship. After all, the position of the sun and moon are what create the lunar phases we view in the sky every night.

For this activity, we will be demonstrating the phases of the moon in the classroom or students can try this at home. All you need is a light source, it can be a lightbulb, or one can hold up a flashlight, pointing in one direction. And a spherical object to represent the moon, and the person will hold the moon out at arm’s length while slowly turning in a circle. In this case, the person holding the moon will be the Earth. As one slowly turns in a circle (or they can hop like the rabbit myth we just discussed), we notice a shadow forming on the object, similar to the moon during its lunar phases. The teacher will first demonstrate the activity and discuss the eight lunar phases. Then students can pair off in groups two or three. One can be the sun, one is the earth holding the moon, and the other person can write down the group’s findings. They will all then do a worksheet of lunar phases to show their understanding.

In this lesson regarding evolution and adaptation I will first teach the students what evolution and adaptation is and then I will introduce the cultural aspect of it by teaching the students how different cultures view animals differently than others. Of course if there are students from those cultures they can rightfully share that way they can be more engaged with the lesson. We will be discussing how in American culture dogs are viewed as mans best friend, but in other cultures they are deemed dirty and dangerous and can not even enter the household.

Different cultures view animals in their own ways. I believe this is an excellent way to introduce culture into the evolution and adaptation lesson/topic.

In this lesson students will learn about chemical changes. Chemical changes occur when a substance combines with another to form a new substance, called chemical synthesis or, alternatively, chemical decomposition into two or more different substances. Matter can also change and become something entirely different, which is called a Chemical change. A chemical change is irreversible which means it cannot change back.

Macedonian Dessert Celufki: Chemical Reactions Involved in Baking Celufki

Description

Celufki are remark of Macedonian Culture, where I’m from. It’s known for the best Celufki. My mom also used to prepare us homemade Celufki sometimes and I remember how impatiently we waited for them to be removed from the hot oven and to eat them instantly. When you are mixing your dessert, it includes such ingredients as water, oil, and eggs. As you mix together your ingredients they form one type of substance. When it’s heated in the oven, a chemical reaction occurs and new bonds are formed. It creates chemical reactions.

Ingredients:

4 egg whites

250 g sugar

1 vanilla sugar

couple of drops of lemon juice

Preparation:

Beat the 4 egg whites with 250 g sugar and 1 vanilla. It’s the best if you slightly mix the egg whites first, then gradually add the sugar with the vanilla. Add the lemon juice drops. Mix at least 10-15 minutes until sugar is dissolved, so it won’t be felt in sweets. Optionally, add chopped nuts, chocolate or dried fruit.

Make forms using a baking syringe or a spoon and place on a baking pan covered with baking paper.

Bake in preheated oven at 130 C for 20-30 minutes. Kisses should be dried in the oven, not baked like other sweets. They will be ready when they would become hard on touch, but be careful not to burn them and not to get yellow color, that’s why they are baked at low temperature 100-150 C degrees, depends on the oven.

Conclusion

After this activity students will learn and observe how chemical changes occur when you bake.
A few things can happen when you bake a cake. Some chemical reactions to keep in mind while doing this tasty experiment are:

Heat causes protein from the egg to change and make the desert firm.

Oil keeps the heat from drying out the cake.

At the beginning of this lesson, students will be introduced to the concept of sound in a different perspective than they are most likely used to. Many kids are familiar with sounds, such as noises, however several students may not realize the scientific background behind it. The students will watch this "What is Sound?" video to briefly touch base on what I will be covering in the lesson. I will then go over key vocabulary words in which students may have heard in the video, yet not fully understand. These terms consist of sound, vibrations, sound waves, energy, and air particles.
During this lesson, I will teach students that a sound is created when sound waves bounce off an object and vibrate against it, causing vibrations to be sent to our ears. I will describe that the vibrations travel through the air or a solid, liquid or gas to the ear. Nonetheless, the stronger the vibrations, the louder the sound. Sounds are fainter the further you get from the sound source. I will then create a type of energy as an example to display to the students. This being said, I will take an empty can and run several rubber bands over the top and bottom of the can. I will use my fingers to pull on the the rubber bands causing them to vibrate and make a sound. This sound will be loud enough for the students to hear it. I will walk around and show the students how the rubber band moves fast creating vibrations. The students will then reciprocate my example and create their own little instrument.

To conclude this lesson plan, I will have the students participate in a fun common sound activity. I will ask the students to pair up with a partner. I will then provide each student with one red solo cup in which they will simply poke a small hole in the bottom of both cups. I will give one partner a long piece of yarn. The students will then thread their yarn through the cups and tie a knot to keep the yarn from pulling back through. The partners will take turns having one friend hold the cup up to their mouth and talk, while the other friend will hold it to their ear and listen. This activity is a great example of vibrations creating sounds. When speaking into the cup, your voice vibrated the air inside of the cup, which caused the bottom of the cup to vibrate. Those vibrations were transferred to the yarn and then into the bottom of your partner's cup, which made the air inside of his or her cup vibrate and become a sound. I will provide an example to show the students.
