Epstein-Barr virus is the most common cause of infectious mononucleosis. It can also lead to Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Burkitt’s lymphoma, Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease, and Nasopharyngeal carcinoma. It is also highly contagious and spreads through bodily fluids, especially saliva. For instance, using a toothbrush or glass that an infected person used can cause the virus to spread. People who are at risk for this includes, teenagers and young adults. However, in low-income settings EBV can often occur during childhood. Symptoms of EBV are fever, sore throat, swollen glands in the neck, swollen liver or spleen, and fatigue. There is no specific treatment for this virus, but there are some ways to relieve symptoms. These include, drinking fluids, resting, taking over the counter medication such as acetaminophen, sucking on lozenges or ice pops, and gargling with warm salt water. Since this virus is spread through saliva, not kissing or sharing drinks, food, or personal items with someone who has EBV is a good way to prevent infection. Always wash your hands if you touch something with saliva on it and make sure to keep your hands away from your mouth after you touch an infected object.
