Heightened political instability in South Vietnam following Diem’s assassination by South Vietnamese military commanders. The lack of a strong leader as replacement, seemed to favour a communist takeover.

public response : Many people were embittered due to the dragging on of war and costs spiralling. As it seemed as though LBJ could not manage the situation, his approval rates from the public started to fall.
