This also implies how he doesn't care about his appearance. Furthermore, Ganderbai reveals his devotion as a doctor since he is quick to respond to his patients' requests.

Ganderbai gives respect to those deserve and those that do not deserve it. Harry, for instance, clearly showed his dislike towards Ganderbai and insulted him many times throughout the story, yet the doctor manages to only glare at the man. When speaking with the narrator, the doctor is respectful and denies any trouble that Harry gave him. The audience can infer that the doctor is devoted to his work and can excuse others' rude behavior.

"...Ganderbai watching Harry's face all the time in a curious intense manner."  (Dahl 344)

He also showed irritation toward Harry when he was being rude and disrespectful, but was able to keep a calm front.

He continued to act professional through his entire visit and understood the level of desperation in the situation. Ganderbai was able to maintain calm and collected even when he started to become frustrated with Harry and helped him instead of yelling back at him.
