Abbas ibn Firnas created a bird like suit. He was an inventor, engineer, and aviator. He tested his contraption near Cordoba Spain. He flew upwards for a few seconds before he went crashing down. It was made of wood, silk, and rods. He went to the top of a mosques and jumped. He fell to the ground, but his suit opened up like a parachute he fell safely to the ground. He got credit for creating the parachute. In 875 he created a new machine with wood, silk, and actual feathers. He stayed in the air for a total of ten minutes. He had a flaw in the design. He didn't figure out how to land so when he went crashing down he severely injured himself. Afterwards he was reflecting what he had done wrong and he had realized that he had forgotten a tail. He used birds as an inspiration and realized they used tails to slow down. He did not make another attempt.

This innovation developed because the government was thriving. It was thriving because it was a time of peace. They didn't have to worry about spending their money on military. He could focus on things that benefited people in a different way. The fifth caliph of the Abbasid dynasty saw arts and sciences very important. Due to this he was one of the greatest patrons of art and science according to the Saylor Foundation. The government would pay people to invent and innovate. Instead of having to worry about food they could invent because the government was paying them. This could help many people learn aviation, engineering, and physics. These would help people create a flying machine. It sparked more innovations about aviation. Making people further study this topic and inspired Leonardo Da Vinci to create his flying machine. This connects to today extremely well. Today there are over thirty million flights a year. Planes are extremely important and without this early innovation we wouldn't be where we are today.
