Abdominal cavity: Divided into an upper part and a lower part. The upper abdominal cavity contains the stomach, small intestine, most of the large intestine, appendix, live, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen

Abdominal regions: Abdominal cavity is divided into regions or sections. One method of division is into quadrants, or four sections. This results in a right upper quadrant, and left lower quadrant. A more precise method of division is into 9 abdominal regions.

Anterior: Body parts in front of the plane, or on the front of the body. Either called ventral or anterior.

Body Cavities: Spaces within the body that contain vital organs. The two main body cavities: the dorsal, or posterior, cavity and the ventral, or anterior cavity.

Body planes: Imaginary lines drawn through the body at various parts to separate the body into sections. The 3 main body planes are transverse, midsagittal, and frontal.

Buccal Cavity: Cavity for mouth, for the teeth and tongue.

Caudal: Means body parts located near the sacral region of the spinal column(also known as the "tail").

Cranial: Which means body parts located near the head

Cranial Cavity: Contains the brain, and the Spinal Cavity (Which contains the spinal cord).

Distal: Further away from point of origin

Dorsal: Body parts on the back of the body. Called dorsal or posterior.

Dorsal Cavity: One long, continuous cavity located on the back of the body. It is divided into 2 sections. (The cranial cavity and the spinal cavity)

Inferior: Body parts below other parts are termed inferior.

Medial: Body parts close to the midline or plane.

Lateral: Body parts away from the midline.

Midsagittal (Median) Plane: Divides the body into right and left sides.

Nasal Cavity: Small cavity for the nose structures.

Orbital Cavity: Small cavity for the eyes.

Pelvic Cavity: Contains the urinary bladder, the reproductive organs, and the last part of the large intestine.

Posterior: The back of the body.

Proximal: Close to the point of reference

Spinal cavity: Contains the spinal cord.

Superior: Body parts above other parts.

Thoracic Cavity: Located in the chest and contains the esophagus, trachea, bronchi, lungs, heart, and large blood vessels.

Transverse Plane: A horizontal plane that divides the body into a top half and a bottom half.

Ventral: In front of the plane or on the front of the body.

Ventral Cavities: Larger than the dorsal cavities. Separated into two distinct cavities by the dome shaped muscle called the diaphragm.
