This year at AISCT we held listening sessions with all of our staff. We used an external person to hold them, catered lunch, and held different sessions for people with different types of jobs. Although we are still in the process of collecting the data and sharing it back, we feel that at the very least this allowed them to be heard.

We did a year long audit on middle and high school curriculum. We created unit-by-unit reshuffles and then did a packet of diverse learning engagements for each unit for each subject with a list of possible areas to focus. We coupled this packet with a list of differentiation tools and identity based reminders for classroom management.

Our Elementary School has begun having cultural music, dance and shared information about Kenya to kick off each of our monthly elementary assemblies. Parents, students and staff have given feedback that it has helped build understanding, love and more interest in Kenyan culture. More people have stated that they look forward to going to the assemblies and it brings a culture of joy to our assemblies.

We asked some representatives from the local culture to plan a 3 minute thing that would be interactive and it we has been successful and asked for since.

Recently, I ran a parent workshop at American International School of Freetown (AISF) focused on identity, privilege, and belonging. The purpose of the workshop was to help parents understand how the concept of intersectionality helps teachers inform how they can create learning spaces that are culturally affirming and inclusive. My son is a student at the school and one of the board president approached me about facilitating this workshop because there had been a few reports of identity-based harm taking place within the school. Also, the school is committed to figuring out how to engage in DEIJ work in a way that goes beyond representation and is fully integrated within curriculum and policy.

Last week we had our DEI consultants at our school and on Saturday morning we invited the whole community to have meaningful conversations about belonging in our school. We are at the beginning of this process, and the feedback from parents and teachers was great as they felt heard and felt that it was important listening to different perspectives. We are beginning to build bridges of understanding in our community whilst identifying patterns of recurrent issues.
