Gary's Case

Gary, a 17 year old first generation Latino-Canadian cis-gender male, is finishing his senior year in highschool. He is worried about graduating and his next steps after high school. He reports not having many friends, that he is not “good at anything”, and he feels anxious around girls. His grades are not high enough to get into any Universities, and his family is disappointed as they have high expectations of him. His two older brothers are successful in their careers, and he looks up to them greatly. He reports feeling like he is depressed. His favourite teacher, Mrs. Farres, at school noticed his lethargy and disconnect, which is “unusual”. As such, Mrs. Farres had a talk with him and suggested for him to come to counselling, which he reluctantly agreed.

Gary is also an animal lover, and spends a lot of his time with the family dog. His ambitions were to get into veterinary school, as he has a passion to help animals. In grade 10, he began volunteering with the SPCA and noted that he really enjoyed it. The staff said he is a natural at building a rapport with the animals.
