Marcus Garvey was the founder of the Back to Africa movement in the early 20th century. He was a civil rights activist and he went to jails in Atlanta prison from 1925 to 1928 because of the Black Star Line. He also founded the UNIA which is the universal negro improvement association. The black Star Line was a boat to take African Americans back to Africa. He believes that him and the K.K.K had similar views on segregation because they both wanted their own state.

The Back to Africa movement had many names like Colonization movement or the After slave act. It was originated in the 20th century in the United States. It encouraged the African Americans to go back to Africa to their home land. His plan was to have all African Americans migrate back to Africa. He wanted all African Americans to get treated equal and with respect. The movement was founded in Jamaica but then he brought it to the US in New York. because he said that African Americans did not have equality or rights in the united states. Middle and upper class African American did not believe in him. The only people that believed him came from the south and from lower classes.

The plan to go to Liberia never happend how he wanted it to go and the he got arrested for fraud by the federal government.
