Mind and Heart Work: "Mr. Popper's Penguins"

1. Mind
a. The settings in the book are Stillwater, Mr. Popper's house, and theaters.
b. The characters in the book are Mr. Popper, Mrs. Popper, Janie Popper, Bill Popper, and 12 penguins.
c. The setting affects the plot because ever since the 12 penguins came into picture for the Poppers, Mr. Popper had to install a large freezing thing in the basement for the penguins.
2. Heart
a. I wonder how the story would've been different if Mr. Popper wasn't a house painter and didn't have a wife and 2 kids! And instead was like a carpenter and instead had adopted a boy!
b. What I felt for the character was kinda sad and kinda happy because Mr. Popper was sad that the penguins were leaving at the end of the book because the book explained that Mr. Popper "wiped his eyes", showing that he was crying a little bit. But then, he was happy again because he gets to go with admiral Drake and the 12 penguins to the North Pole!
c. I connected at the end of the book because I was kind of happy that Mr. Popper got to go to the North Pole with admiral Drake and the 12 penguins! This is great because Mr. Popper continues to see the 12 penguins everyday at the North Pole, instead of missing them!

The book I read, "Mr. Popper's Penguins", is a window because you get to see the life of Mr. Popper inside the book. Here are some text from the book supporting that the book is a window:
1. "Mr. Popper, the house painter, was going home from work. He was carrying his buckets, his ladders, and his boards, so that he had rather a hard time moving along."
2. "He had a nice little house of his own. A wife whom he loved dearly. And two children named Janie and Bill."
3. "How he wished that he had been a scientist instead of a house painter in Stillwater, so that he might have joined some of the great polar expeditions."

What I've learned about my reader identity is that I really, really like fiction because it's sometimes funny, and it's just very enjoyable. And what I've learned about myself as a reader is that I worked really hard because I did a lot of really, really hard work throughout this school year in reading. And another thing is that once again, I really, really like fiction.
