In 1919. Henrietta Abbott has found herself fearful about every that is going on around herself, her Mama under the weather, her Father working overseas in Italy, Nanny Jane is too occupied with other important events such as looking after Mama with the doctor, and not paying any attention to Henry at all. Now Henry finds herself running wild with her imagination impacting her choices. She discovers Moth in the Nightingale Wood a women which thought had died named Mrs. Young. Soon, Henry grows an undying friendship between Moth as also helping her sick mother. Henrietta finds challenges with the doctor Hardy and Doctor Chilvers holding her mother captive of ambition in Helldon and Piglet being held captive at Mrs. Hardy's home. Eventually, she rescues Piglet and her mom free at Hope House. Henrietta wants to live with with her family in peace.

The Campfire🔥

In the beginning, during Henry' move to the Hope House with her family, at first she felt terrified when she acquired the scent of lingering smoke from Moth's campfire. Eventually, Henrietta gets into a fight with Nanny Jane. Full of aggravation Henry runs out of Hope House wandering deep into the forest. Furthermore, Henry gets lost and tries to find Moth's clearing of her campsite, but she couldn't find Moth's campfire. Then, Henrietta realizes that she felt more safe around Moth's campfire. The campfire represents protection and safety.

Where is he now? I asked. Gone, she said. The Battle of Jutland, 1916. Alfred joined the navy as soon as he was old enough to fight, but he never came home. The ship he was serving on was sunk and he drowned. He was still a boy really. Just a boy . . . The nightingale represents a coming close to death but not dying. In the story Henrietta reads the story of the Nightingale her mother's favorite book. In the book the mom almost died as well.

Robert

Throughout the story, most of the tragic events had effected Henry deeply. This resulted in fear and unsure of what to do. Eventually, she starts thinking about her brother Robert and how Henry wishes that he was here. Not only Robert was a figment of Henrietta's imagination, but Robert acted like her conscience, helping her problem-solve, think before taking action, and encouraging her to be brave. Robert symbolizes Henry' conscience.

Powerlessness

Henrietta faces challenges between the Hardys and doctor Chilvers. At the start of the story we meet doctor Hardy when Henry moves to Hope House her father hires doctor Hardy to care Mama's illness. Soon, Henry meets the Hardys and they treat her very poorly by Mrs. Hardy insulting Henry and Piglet as doctor Hardy forbids her to see Mama, letting her as a prisoner to her room and forces her to not do what she wants to do. Whenever Henry gets curious she gets into trouble and doctor Hardy goes mad tell her that girls shouldn't go on adventures and what not. This makes Henry powerless because she isn't an adult, so she can't do nothing about.

The external conflict is Henrietta's Mother being sick and doctor Hardy knowing what is best for her, but the doctor is too blind to see that most of the treatments are not best for her. Most of the treatments caused her to be in captivity in her room. It made Henrietta worry because she felt the doctor did not know what was best for her.

Henrietta realized, that she needs to be the leader of the house because ever since her brother Robert passed away last summer it has been very hard for their family. She recused Piglet and her mother so she showed leadership by taking charge instead of listening to the doctor's orders.

The internal conflict is that Henrietta struggling with her family life her mother under a horrible illness, Her father traveling to Italy for work, and Nanny Jane is too busy by taking care of her mother's sickness she is paying zero attention to her. Henry soon starts seeing hallucinations or she thinks she sees and thinks that the doctor was right that she was going mad.
