In the novel, there is a character named Johnny who is Ponyboy's (the main character) best friend. He is the one who says this to Ponyboy. Johnny is trying to tell Ponyboy that he shouldn't try to fit in with the Greasers and be who he is. He is trying to get Ponyboy to embrace his differences (like his intelligence) rather than pretend like he is the same as everybody else. This relates to the theme because Johnny is trying to get Ponyboy to be his own individual rather than fitting in as a Greaser.

Randy is a Soc (the opposite gang from the Greasers) and he came to talk to Ponyboy. At the end when he says "Thanks grease" and then he says "I didn't mean that" Randy realizes that Ponyboy is his own individual. Even though he is labelled as a Greaser he is his own person. Randy then said "I meant, thanks, kid" because he know understands that Ponyboy is his own individual and shouldn't be labelled because of his social class.

They are talking to each other about sunsets because it symbolize's the shared humanity between the Socs and Greasers. However, other Socs and Greasers do not like talking to each other nor are they sensitive. This relates to the theme because this quote shows that the individuals in the gangs are different than their stereotypes.
