During this padlet I want to examine a concept presented in the book, Every Song Ever. The author, Ben Ratliff, describes the "one note" concept which is what I will analyze and define. I will give my interpretation on whether my views align with Ratliff's or if they do not. In the book, Ratliff shows many examples of this concept. One of these examples that I will examine, is the rap artist Drake, in his song Furthest Things and then discover a song outside of Ratliff's list of examples that uses the "one note" idea.

The single note

A single note expresses different meaning that Ratliff explains as "authenticity" ( Every song Ever pg. 72) . Also, he states, "When you listen to a single note sounded repeatedly and temporarily holding court, you are listening either for form of resistance or play - or resistance as play - but not the language of dutifully developing and then circling back to sum up". I have heard this style of music but never understood the concept until now and because of this I completely agree with Ratliff's interpretation of the "one note" concept. The importance of this concept, I believe , tends to be more valuable to the artist than the listener. The reason I believe this is because most people listening to the one note do not realize the emotional connection trying to take place it just happens naturally. However the writer of the song, ore the composer does realize this connection and has a basic understanding of the effects it has on their audience. This concept is very important for all kinds of music because all music has an emotional connection and the one note idea only draws out more emotion.

Drake and Horses

(start at 2:00 min)
Ratliff lists the many examples to show to single note in action, and one of these examples is Furthest Things, written by Drake. Ratliff identifies that 2:00 minutes into the song, Drake raps, "You know I stay reminiscin and makeup sex is a tradition but you been missing girl and you...". Ratliff goes on to explain that he did this, " In one breath, all around B" Taking the understanding provided by Ratliff, we can now direct the meaning of this single note phrase in his song. First the emotion aspect. The meaning of the song can be summarized by one line Drake say which is, "...the furthest thing from perfect...". "Imperfection" in the form of a trust, people, girls, drugs, etc. By staying on the same note it naturally emphasizes this excerpt through the "resistance" of the song according to Ratliff (unsurprisingly it's a girl). So, through the single note method Drake has emphasized the emotional aspect of the song, but it does end there. The technical aspect is changed as well. By staying on the same note we know that this effects the natural form of the song. In this instance it is a subtle transition into the repeated B note which eases the listener into less resistance. Ratliff has opened my eyes with a song that exceptionally exemplifies a phenomenon that had happened to me but I was unable to identify it and much less able to define it. However now I can. Horses is a song made popular by the movie in the never ending series Fast and Furious, Fate of the Furious. This song shows the one note concept very well. Throughout the entire piece one note is repeated for a period of time then it changes to another and that note is repeated for a while, a series of one note sections. This is the reason why I believe it is a strong candidate for an example that shows the single note concept.
