1. "I am sorry, Sura Gitla, but I cannot find your name on the list. You will just have to wait for next year...I return the next day and the next day and the next day and next. Each time she says no and each day I go back...But one magical late fall day, she finally gives in." (pg 10-13)

Sura, also known as Gucia, goes to her first day of school to realize that she was not registered and was sent home. After, Sura returns every day until the teacher finally gives in. The passage is significant because it tells Sura to fight for what she thinks is right and shapes her. The passage shows the theme of never giving up with Sura returning everyday until she gets in the class. The author uses the word magical in the passage to further show how Sura getting in the class was wonderful for her.

Gucia's friend tells her that polish soldiers were yelling that war with Germany started. The passage is significant because it is the beginning to the life she was known and that she needs to persevere though what would come. The passage uses a polish word making the passage more authentic and gives more emphasis to the passage. The passage continues the plot of the book also being the rising action.

2. "Searching for a purpose, a cause to believe in, I am attracted to Zionism...Our movement is not religious or political but devoted to educating young people about Jewish culture." (pg 42)

The passage explains how she is a Jewish but not only that she is a Zionist which is a group of Jewish people who are devoted to establishing a Jewish state, Eretz Yisrael. Her motive in life and intentions for the future are highlighted in this passage although the war will ruin all of it. The passage foreshadows how she will react to situations later on to accomplish her goals in the future. The passage also describes more about Gucia's Jewish believes and is important when the Germans control Poland.

4. "The bombing and shooting seem to be over. We are running low on food and so I have volunteered to go out to the bakery and vegetable stores, we will not allow Mama to take the risk... My brothers and father dare not go outside of the house." (pg 97)

Seven days after the war begins most fighting is over but Gucia's family starts to run out of food so she goes out because there was too much risk for her mom father or brother to go outside. Gucia takes the responsibility of their parents and brothers forcing her to grow up and mature faster then normal people. "We will not allow Mama to take the risk" shows that her mom wanted to do it but her collective family said no showing how in even situations like this the mother figure would protect and help her family and children. The passage foreshadows the suffering from starvation and other things they will face because they already ran out of food only a week into occupation.

5. "I know those horrible stories are true. Gucia, you have to try to save yourself. The Germans soldiers will be here in less then week to start deportations. You cannot wait even one day longer." (pg 134)

The rebbitzin privately tells Gucia that she needs to escape the ghetto before the Germans start deporting the Jewish to camps, and that she needs to go now. This is the rising action right before the climax of her escaping the ghetto and being alone and afraid for her life. The stories he talks about shows that the same will happen to their town and that she needs to escape if she wants to live. It was at this moment she decided that she needs to leave everything she knew, that was left, behind and start a new life. Gucia changes a lot buy running away so she can survive with the threat of death instead of taking care of her family and friends.
