Diabetes and cardiovascular diseases have been the leading cause of chronic wounds. These wounds can take a long time to heal, and increases the risk for infection. Bandaged wounds are usually assessed when the bandage is removed or when it's being changed. This new innovation on smart bandage will allow the bandage to sense the state of the wound and deliver medication into the wound as it deems necessary.
The smart bandage is made up of two parts consisting of the bandage and an electronic module that has built-in drug releasing micro-beads(Mostafalu, et al., 2018). The bandage is low cost and can be disposal, leaving out the microprocessor which is reusable. The bandage has temperature and pH sensors that enables continuous tracking of oxygen and glucose concentrations without removing the dressing. Normal wound pH is between 5.5 to 6.5 and anything above that can indicate an infection (Mostafalu, et al., 2018). The microprocessor can sense this change in pH and can administer antibiotics or vascular endothelial growth factors as needed. The doctor can program the central processor so drugs can be administered when certain conditions are detected. "A stimuli‐responsive drug releasing system comprising of a hydro-gel loaded with thermo‐responsive drug carriers and an electronically controlled flexible heater is also integrated into the wound dressing to release the drugs on‐demand," said Sonkusale (Schrage & University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2017).
The bandage also has the ability to monitor treatment and decides whether further treatment is necessary. Real time updates can be provided using blue-tooth, and enables the healthcare team to access the results (Mostafalu, et al., 2018).

(Image from Tufts.edu)

Team Members

The members of my team i would select would be Sheila, Faith, Louis, Chloe, and Alice. I chose these five because they would be a perfect fit with my own five strengths.
Sheila's strength theme is achiever and i picked her to be on my team as she will bring dedication and commitment to the project. Sheila and the team can work together and make full use of her strategic talents in-order to identify risks with the new smart bandage, and create alternative ways to proceed. Faith is stronger in the futuristic theme, and she will be able to work with the rest of the team by inspiring them with her imaginative strength and creative visions. Faith is very important to the team, as her talents will allow the team to focus on the future of smart bandage. I also picked Louis because his greatest strength is the learner theme. The learner theme is vital to the team, as Louis will challenge the team with the eagerness to learn. Louis will help the rest of the team to learn new ways to develop the smart bandage and have them excited about the product. Chloe was my other choice because of her strength in the competition theme. The competitor in Chloe will give the team the drive to launch the new smart bandage. Other companies will be looking at developing similar products so we will have to work on delivering the product before anyone else does. Chloe will help the other team members develop a spirit of winning. Alice's strength is achiever and she will be a good fit to the team. She is a hard worker with strong work ethics. Alice will be able to lead by example to the team and be a role model to other team members. The smart bandage is a new product, possibly the first of it's kind and will take a lot of time and dedication. I know Alice will work tirelessly with the team until we reach our goal.
We will be able to understand each other and work towards the same goals as we share the same strengths. These team members all bring different talents to the team but will create a balance between the strengths. Where some team members are short coming, the other will be able to fill in the gap. All five team members can relate to my strengths and i will be able to bring them together and work towards our end goal.

Opinion on smart bandage

Smart bandage is a new innovation and it will require a large number of trials and experiments until it is approved. This product has the potential of changing the wound healing process. Smart bandage will be able to improve patient outcome. With traditional bandage we have to assess the wound and that requires taking off the dressing. This is can result in infections or disrupts the process of wound healing. The new bandage would be able to track the wound healing process without the healthcare taking off the dressing. These results can be accessed digitally using the micro-processor attached to the bandage via blue-tooth. The good thing about the smart bandage is that it will send the results as changes are happening and it will decide to administer medication as needed and on time than if we were using the traditional bandage. I think this is a great innovation and it will speed up the healing process, reducing the rate of infections and possible amputations. Even though there is a long way to go for the new wound dressing to be approved, it is very exciting news for patients with chronic wounds and healthcare teams across the nation.
