In my time in the workforce I have experienced both subpar leadership and ideal leadership. My experiences with management and human resources is what encouraged me to pursue a career in Human Resources.
While researching the definition of management, I came across this picture. Management is an art form... You have to continue to practice your social skills along with your conceptual skills in order to perfect them. Then you use these skill sets to help organize your team in an effective manner to reach an overall goal.

Technical skills, conceptual skills, and human skills... What is needed in order to become a Human Resource Manager? Well, all of the above. After completing module one, I was left wondering what skills I needed to improve. I came across the attached article that was very enlightening.
It list nine essential skills needed in order to succeed in human resource management. The article includes the common sense skills such as communication, organization, and compassion. It's also important to be tech savvy and able to negotiate as well.
I believe I have what it takes to become an HR manager. My main concern is my nonverbal communication. It's a family joke that I have a "glass face". My emotions and thoughts are easily read on my face due to my facial expressions. This is something I will need to learn to control in order to perform my job effectively.

When making purchases in the past, I never considered what the company gives back to it's community and what contributions the make to help the environment.
Looking back on previous companies I worked for I realized that none of them promoted CSR. I've worked predominantly in financial institutions and we never participated in much more than March of Dimes fundraisers. After graduation I would like to find employment with a company that promotes CSR. I feel as if I would be able to make a positive contribution as well since I plan on entering Human Resources.

I previously worked for a well known payday loan company. They paid very well and I was able to move up in the company quickly. While I was employed there they were being investigated by the CFPB. While they were being investigated they were trying to come up with cognancy plans.
Many of the customers were regulars and were stuck in the payday loan cycle. It can be really hard to breakout of the cycle. I felt as if they prayed on the low income families. It was hard to see the same people every two weeks to a month giving money they didn't have to give. When I went on maternity leave I looked for employment elsewhere because it weighed on my conscience to continue working there.

I found this article that I found very interesting.
There have been several stages of globalization with the first beginning in the first century B.C. in China. China began selling and trading fine goods with Middle Eastern and European countries using the Silk Road. By the 7th century, the spice trade boomed as well due to sea routes.
The Age of Discovery helped globalization as well with explorers such as Magellan which helped cut out many of the middle men in trade, making the goods significantly cheaper. This was all just the beginning of global trade. It was interesting to read all of the information about the early stages of globalization.

I located this interesting article featured on Cascade and the list of companies with the best business strategies was not surprising as they are all top companies that everyone has heard of unless you live under a rock
At the top of the list was Tesla. They went against typical business methods but have ended up as the most profitable car company. The second company listed is Airbnb, which I personally use quite often. Airbnb has changed the way many people travel and started when two college graduates were short on their rent so they laid out some air mattresses in a spare bedroom and called it the air bed and breakfast. Airbnb is now worth over $100 billion.
The list also names Toyota, HubSpot, Apple, PayPal, and Spotify as having superb business strategies.

I am planning to pursue a career in Human Resources and they play a huge role in setting the standards of organizational culture. Organizational culture is a reflection of the organization's leadership as well as a mirror of the organization's core values.
While researching organizational culture, I learned there are 4 different types: adhocracy culture, clan culture, hierarchy culture, and market culture. Humble inquiry is something I've used my entire life, but I was unaware there was a term for it. I am a passive person and often have a hard time of asserting myself. I have always found it was easier to ask questions as opposed to telling someone what to do.
“Our culture emphasizes that leaders must be wiser, set direction, and articulate values, all of which predisposes them to tell rather than ask,” Schein wrote in his book “Humble Inquiry.” When I was in a leadership role, I used this regularly. I also used Humble Inquiry while making friends as well. It was always easier for me to ask others about themselves instead of talking about myself.

I am currently pursuing my Bachelor's Degree in Business Management with a concentration on Human Resources. This has been one of the most relevant courses I've taken so far. I hope to become an HR Manager for a large scale company that helps people.
Growing up I thought I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. My role model was my nana and she taught for over 50 years. She inspired many people in my family to pursue a career in teaching. When I began college, I was enrolled in elementary education. Although I adored the children I got to work with, I did not agree with the course plan you are forced to teach as there is not much flexibility. I also do not believe that teachers are adequately compensated.
Working at my last employer, I found my passion for training. During the onset of COVID we transitioned to working from home. I had to adapt to training remotely so I was given the ability to make my own training material. I did so well with the training material and the presentations that a job was created for me called a Performance Coach. This is what inspired me to want to work in Human Resources. I would prefer to find a position in training and development.

It explains the evolution of Human Resources and what Human Resources is responsible for now.
Technology has changed Human Resources in multiple ways. There is now so much more data available to make tables and charts. This is used to analyze trends and make educated business decisions.
Hiring has changed significantly as well. HR Managers would put an ad in the paper and hop for the best. With social media you can now thoroughly research a candidate prior to making a decision to interview them or not. Potential candidates can also use social media to research the company as well. Each employee is a brand ambassador for your company and what they post about the company is important. The role of Human Resources has changed very quickly and will continue to do so as technology advances.

Motivation? What is that? This is one of the areas I struggle with the most. In the Ted Talk about procrastination, I am in instant gratification monkey. Want an example??? This Visual Journal is due tomorrow and I've known it was due for months, but here I am finishing it up the day before its due. I'm a full fledged panic monster now though.
I located this video that offered an equation to help keep your employees productive:
                                P = M x A x E
  Performance = Motivation x Ability x Environment

To reach a high level of performance an employee must want to perform the job well, have the ability to perform the job effectively, and have the materials, resources, and equipment (environment) to do the job.

What traits make a good leader?

What traits do you think make a great leader? I have had my share of managers and none of them were alike. I learned management skills from each of them though. Some taught me what not to do as a manager while I had others I strive to emulate.
Leaders should be personable and charismatic. It's difficult to get people to listen and organize if you are unable to communicate effectively. Integrity is an essential trait as well. It's important to be honest and have the ability to admit when you make mistakes instead of using someone or something as a scapegoat.

The Effects of Management Controls on Productivity

This article provides many different types of management controls and their individual effects on productivity. It provides 4 different means for controlling productivity and monitoring individuals growth:

Quality Management Systems

Balanced Scorecards

Employee Interviews

Employee Reviews

In the past, my employers used QMS and employee reviews. Although my jobs were in different settings they each required I reach a specific quota per day. When I worked in a warehouse when I was younger I had to pick a certain amount of items per hour. When I was employed with an auto finance company, I had to call a certain amount of customers a day. I found this measure to be effective. I knew what was expected of me and I knew what I had to do in order to make it.

Setting Company Standards

What are company standards? They define how your company acts and can be guidelines that help build your brand such as quality, safety, and performance. It's important that a companies standards follow their mission statement and business objectives.
When I look for my next employer I plan to review the companies standards to ensure they align with my own. Previously, I was just looking for a pay check so I never put much thought into what the company stood for. This often put me in some situations that could have been prevented had I done my research.
I plan to look for employment with a company that is doing good in their community. I recently saw a video about a company that builds homes for the impoverished using 3D printers. I imagine that job is so fulfilling to know that you are actually helping people. This is very important to me.
