The theme of my poetry portfolio is, sometimes letting go of someone is the best thing to do. This is a very hard topic to discuss with others because it can become very personal very quickly. However I feel as if people should talk about it more.

My example of a blackout poem is a great one to show the “rules” of a blackout poem. A blackout poem is actually very loose ended. To start a blackout poem choose some words that stand out and then try to make it all cohesive. My blackout poem is the first part of my portfolio which shows someone letting go of someone they love, and picturing when times were different.

The poem above is a great example of a haiku for it follows all of the rules. It is in a 5,7,5 syllable format, involves nature and describes an experience. This haiku reflects my theme because it begins with someone being sad with the rain representing tears and as as it rains hard (drip drip drop) the rain starts to slow down (pitter pitter patter) and then it becomes sunny. Which shows that eventually with time the sadness of letting go will fade and it will be happier.

My acrostic uses a word that relates to my theme as my base word that goes downward and makes a poem with each line starting with the letter in the word. The word lonely shows how letting someone go can leave you feeling and wishing for a time when they were back even though letting go is best, which reflects my theme.

Since this is a free verse it doesn’t have any rules. However I incorporated the changing of sides as a representation of how the person both wants the person to come back into their lives but is glad they aren’t in their life anymore. This shows my theme because they are letting someone go even though it’s hard they don’t want them back in their life.
