Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, etc. still have things to say despite their assimilationist leanings. We sometimes need to add context for our students about the "journey" toward antiracism-- just because we weren't always there doesn't mean we can't get there. I think that get's lost. We need to allow people the growth mindset when it comes to racist thoughts along with being antiracist ourselves.

I feel that all educators are responsible in teaching an anti racist curriculum, especially in history. As a social science teacher, I believe I need to be more aware incorporate anti-racist topics in Civics. We spend a lot of time with students and teachers are greatly influential. I think it is our responsibility to talk about these topics because at the end it is knowledge that will benefit our country and community. The work is also for ourselves and deconstructing what we 'know' to be the truth. Holding those difficult conversations, being uncomfortable, and calling out comments especially. One active thing I will be doing for myself and asking that of my students is to take ownership of our implicit bias - we aren't always responsible for our first thought, but we are responsible for the second. If I want my students to work on being actively anti-racist, I must continue the work myself by being open and sharing my thoughts.

It gave me insight that many people are not knowledgable about these facts and have not been looking at everyday actions through the lens of oppression. Racism is so ingrained. People replying "All lives matter" to "Black lives matter" do not understand how that is such a slap in the face. Of course all lives matter, but all lives do not matter until black lives matter, and black lives do not matter until history is faced and reality is changed. We as educators need to begin in the classrooms. Our students are the change for tomorrow. While some of us say how shocked we are to learn about the War on Drugs' extent, for many Black and Brown youth, they have have had direct experiences with this. Racism is what you know growing up, the world teaches you that the system is not in your favor.
