Petechiae, purpura, and ecchymoses (as seen above in the photo) along with slow, continuous bleeding from any injuries or wounds
Epistaxis
Blood-filled bullae in the mouth
Gingival bleeding
Retinal hemorrhages
Enlarged lymph nodes
Jaundice
Weakness, Malaise and Fatigue
Prolonged/heavy menstrual cycle that is unusual for the person
Low platelet count is significant at <100,000, increased risk for spontaneous bleeding occurs at 50,000 and in emergent cases it is <20,000
Thrombocytopenia usually has no symptoms it is usually discovered with a routine CBC test
Bruising easily of the skin

Bone Marrow study-shows number, size and cytoplasmic maturity of megakaryocytes
Ultrasound of the spleen to determine of spleen is enlarged

General - removal of offending agents if it is drug-induced, treatment of the underlying disorder, transfusions of RBCs or platelets
Diet - avoidance of alcohol, well-balanced diet
Activity - rest periods between activities, during active bleeding strict bed rest
Medications - corticosteroids (prednisone), IVIG, lepirudin, bivalirudin, or argatroban for heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, stool softeners
Surgery - splenectomy if hypersplenism is the cause of the thrombocytopenia
