SAY
"To hang on from day to day and from week to week, spinning out a present that had no future, seemed an unconquerable instinct, just as one's lungs will always draw the next breath so long as there is air available" (126)

MEAN
Both Winston and Julia have come to the realization that their relationship will not end happily ever after. They will be discovered and captured, forced to confess and be vaporized apart from one another. This subjection to torture though does not scare them as rather than thinking about their inescapable and uncontrollable future, they continue their love affair.

MATTER
Orwell compares Winston and Julia's surprising love affair to a very commonly understood body function (breathing), providing better understanding for his audience. Winston and Julia have the option of ending their love affair at any time and thus not be caught and live out their lives alone. However, they feel they can not break their love affair because of the connection they have. They are in complete of lack of control of any part of their lives as Big Brother controls their past and future and instinct controls their present.

SAY
"Oceania was at war with Eastasia! The next moment there was a tremendous commotion. The banners and posters with which the square was decorated all wrong! Quite half of them had the wrong faces on them. It was sabotage! The agents of Goldstein had been at work!" (149)

MEAN
During the Hate Week celebrations, instead of attacking Eurasia in speeches at rallies, the Inner Party says that Oceania had been at war with Eastasia for as long as anyone could remember. This announcement is a shock to the people but it is swallowed as they freak out and start to tear down all of the Eurasian posters. Everyone blames the Eurasian posters on Goldstein because obviously, they have been at war with Eastasia all these years.

MATTER
This quote can connect to totalitarian governments today, where the citizens have no thought of their own but what the government is drilling into them, so they follow them blindly because that is the only thing they can grasp onto when other ideas are not even available to be thought. They are more easily susceptible to swallow the more complicated and ludicrous idea because they do not have anything else to believe in.

“They could not alter your feelings; for that matter you could not alter them yourself, even if you wanted to. They could lay bare in the utmost detail everything that you had done or said or thought; but the inner heart, whose workings were mysterious even to yourself, remained impregnable.” (138)

MEAN
Although the Party has the tools to draw out facts, and thoughts from a person, they don’t have the ability to truly change who they are and how they feel. No matter how much a person is tortured, or how history is rewritten, they cannot alter a person’s inner feelings.

MATTER
Over the course of its reign in Oceania, the Party, has "vaporized" many people. This means they were erased from history, to become an "unperson". Before unpersons are killed or sent to forced-labor camps, they are tortured until they confess to committing a "thoughtcrime" or otherwise. However, even in their last moments, even if the Party knows your every thought, action and fact from a person's life, they cannot change their feelings, because even the person wouldn't know how.

“He had the sensation of stepping into the dampness of a grave, and it was not much better because he had always known that the grave was there and waiting for him.” (132)

MEAN
Winston has always felt that death was hanging over his shoulder, but now it felt closer than ever now that he was finally turning his words into actions. He felt so close to death that he could feel the dampness of his own future grave.

MATTER
By agreeing to meet with O’Brien, Winston went from using small individual hidden actions to fight the Party to preparing to give his life for the resistance. He had always known that his thoughts against the government would manifest into a wrong facial expression or inappropriate comment, and get him vaporized. However, now Winston thought that if he was careful enough, he could live the rest of his natural life in peace, but now, he knows that he will be caught. Either he will have made a mistake in reading O’Brien and be arrested on the spot, or he will wait for his time to come, as he completes dangerous acts of resistance for the Brotherhood.
