So many different groups of people that come from different backgrounds that can speak the same language, but in a different way. It made me so angry that in such important situations, such as in a hospital, she would be brushed off unless someone else spoke for her. To me, it showed a lack of empathy and care that should be there regardless of who the other person is. Like Amy, this struggle did contribute to how I feel about my mother and my relationship with her. I had to take on responsibility at a young age, so I matured faster and there are moments where my mother has expressed she feels as if I grew up too fast and I act as if I don't need her anymore. I also relate to the shame I felt when people who knew me meet my mother and say, "She's your mom? I thought she'd be more like you." My siblings and I had a hard time being raised and then outside of home being spoken to and expected to communicate in a different dialect.  At home we mostly speak with body language often pointing in a general direction of what we need or sounds to describe something. Being first generation of immigrant parents also required us to grow up much faster than other kids. Communicating, explaining to and defending your parents is a common shared experience that I often don’t see in literature.
