What I liked about Ben Ratliff's "Every Song Ever" is that is forced readers to listen to music in ways they never would have before. It challenges them to pinpoint certain attributes in a song that we as listeners. Another thing that I liked about this book is that it made the listeners aware of different genres. The examples used in this book spanned the whole musical spectrum.

Although I believe that Ratliff's book is a great book and one that people interested in music should read, I did find some problems with it. I think some of the language and wording is tough for people not too familiar with music to grasp. I'm not necessarily saying that the concepts are too hard, more so that the wording used to present the concepts made them harder to completely understand.

How has it changed how I listen to music?

It has and will continue to impact how I listen to music. I listen to the minute details many people would just not pay any attention to. I think I enjoy now thinking and listening more in depth to pieces of music.

Quote 1

One of my favorite quotes in this book by Ratliff has to do with closeness. Ratliff says, "Sometimes the closeness of two musicians within a band is what makes the band capable of moving beyond normal limits." I really can appreciate the closeness of musicians because I was in band for 7 years. Me and my good friend Duane were so in sync that we could play nearly anything and it would sound great.

Another quote that stood out to me was one about linking. Ratliff says, "As for musical form, Varèse wrote, it is not a structure to be backed into; it is better understood as the result of a process. If the overall form of a piece of music is predictable, then the possibility of musical form has been underestimated." I think this quote stood out to me because unpredictable music is really something fascinating to me. I feel that you can appreciate music more when there are twists and turns nobody can see coming.
