We allow students to choose their own books before independent reading. However, I do think yellow and green readers don't have as engaging choices as other levels. I love the idea of letting students take home books that we are "retiring" from our classroom libraries on special occasions rather than donating them to a thrift store. 
I would like to try and find more on level books that excite them such as "frozen, avengers, starwars" etc.... Stories that may encourage them to WANT to read instead of reading because it's expected.
